Iran starting work on new nuclear reactor

Alright everybody, time to overreact!

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Iran is starting design work on a new nuclear reactor, the head of the country's Atomic Energy Organization said Wednesday, according to Iranian media.

The design should be complete in two to three years and the reactor should be operational within five, Ali Akbar Salehi told the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

The remarks come a week after the United Nations Security Council slapped new sanctions on Iran as punishment for its controversial nuclear program.

The United States and its allies believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies it, saying its nuclear program is for energy and medical research.

Salehi described the planned new facility as a "research reactor." Iran currently has a research reactor which produces medical isotopes.

As far as I'm aware they are of no threat to the US, in fact it's the US that has historically meddled in their domestic affairs. India, Pakistan and Israel all researched nuclear technology and developed waepons and they never got this level of harassment :dunno:

That's cause they didn't disagree with the United States until after they got their nuclear weapons. :yesyes:

Well Doc Brown did sell them cheap plutonium.

How dare a country getting threatened and attacked try to defend themselves.

Getting a brand new SAM system from the Russians? That's good for defensive purposes, no problem with that.

Updating their tanks? That's just fine, reasonable defensive move and they can get all the T-72's they want because if necessary our A-10's will just use them for target practice in case war does break out, so no problem.

Getting brand new assault rifles for the army? Again, reasonable for defensive purposes, no problem.

Getting state of the art man portable anti-tank missiles? Yup, defensive, no problem.

Getting brand new Mig-29's or SU-30's? They got "short legs" so they're pretty much a defensive weapon, no problem.

Getting nukes? No way. Defensive weapons are weapons that can be used within your own country to protect against an invader, but nukes are designed to be used against other countries, not necessarily a country they're at war with at the present time. Nukes are offensive weapons. Their only "defensive" purpose is to keep the other guy from using them, it worked okay during the cold war as the Soviets were rather reasonable, but these weapons in the hands of some very irrational and mentally unstable individuals like the Ayatollahs or that nutjob Am-on-a-jihad, no way. If America is not willing to destroy their nuclear weapons program disguised as a "peaceful" reactor, let Israel do it.

Saudi Arabia has already given Israel permission to use it's airspace for an attack. That's very good news. It'll shorten flight time for the Israeli jets.

Actually all countries that DO have Nuclear weapons never say they will use them against other countries, they always refer to them as deterrents which is defensive, ie they'll use them if another nation attacks with nuclear weapons first. It would be best if no one had them at all in an ideal world.

Do they have an insane leader like AhmaFuhrer? A fascist organization bent on exporting their brand of idiocy like the Iranian gov't?

Pakistan's ISI is insane however their gov't has a wee bit more intelligence than Iran Revolutionary Council.

Israel will take care of it. :yesyes:

The Israelis do not have the military means to carry out a conventional strike… 100 F/15 & 16's on a one off mission at the extreme end of their range will just stir things up and not destroy Iran's nuclear program.

In fact, we bombed Salman Pak for months before and during Gulf War I and still had to blow it up by hand in the end.

If Israel want to take care of it, they should have done this a long time ago. Allowing Iran to fortify and disperse their installations over the years while doing nothing at all doesn't make logical sense from a military perspective. Because of that, this puts Israeli planners in a complicated position; they now have to deal with more Iranian targets this year (and even more so for next year and beyond) than they would have several years ago.

Saudi Arabia has already given Israel permission to use it's airspace for an attack. That's very good news. It'll shorten flight time for the Israeli jets.

Actually, Saudi Arabia have refuted airspace claim.

Saudi Arabia: We will not give Israel air corridor for Iran strike

If they are indeed granting Israel overfly rights, they would have not deliberately leak information like this.

If only they had an aircraft capable of taking the 30,000lb bunker buster that came out recently. We've modified our B-2's to carry it however.;)

That's why Israel will not carry out airstrikes in the foreseeable future.

let's hope this reactor will get blown

Bombing their reactor will only slow down Iran's nuclear program and there is more than one reactor, some of them buried deep inside mountains (out of Israel's reach) and the others, well let's just hope they don't have undisclosed ones.

^ That was the most impartial post on Israel/Iran I have ever seen on this thread.

We could all learn a thing or two from you.

The didn't even discover freedom or religious tolerance yet. How did they skip ahead to nuclear reactors? :dunno:
