I voted for both but I'll watch more of the Indy 500. Love watching F1 race on the streets of Monaco!

There are actually three big races this weekend: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. In the U.S., the Coke 600 will probably get the highest ratings, as it has for several years. But as always, I'll watch the Monaco Grand Prix live. And for the first time in many, many years (since 1995), I'll watch the entire Indy 500 - but on DVR. I feel like the bad taste left by the split between CART/Champ Car and the IRL has now passed. Time to finally let it go. Oh, and I'll catch the highlights of the Coke 600.

BTW, I'm sure that one of our members, Andronicus, will be at Indy. So I hope he has a great time.

Yep, I was at IMS for Carb Day during the day on Friday and then the Indiana State fairgrounds for midgets and modifieds at night on the dirt. Then I went to IRP/Lucas Oil Raceway for The Night Before the 500 (Mazda Pro Series and Silver Crown midgets) on Saturday. And of course, I was in the stands for the Indy 500 as usual. I thought it was a very exciting race today right up until the end. I haven't seen any replays yet and I won't get to watch it until tonight because of tape delay, but on the video boards (I sit in turn 4) it looked like Dario pinched Sato below the white line in turn one. It ruined what would have been a photo finish and ended the race under caution. I fucking hate Franchitti and his annoying cunt of a wife, Ashley Judd. Overall though, 35 lead changes made it very interesting to watch. So much so that the 95 degree weather didn't bother me, but it did keep quite a few other people away. Only 365 more days until next year's 500. :(

As far as comparing Le Mans to Indy, it's a matter of your tastes in racing. I grew up watching sprint cars, midgets, modified cars, and IndyCar. Naturally, I'm going to be more partial to that kind of racing than I am to F1. It doesn't mean that one is better than the other, it just means I have more exposure to it. Anyone who doesn't think that racing in an oval is real racing is a fucking idiot. Plain and simple. I'd like to see you try and compete out on the dirt in one of the midgets or modified cars. It takes just as much skill to do that well as it does to race on a road course. Racing is racing. One kind isn't superior to the other.

Finally, there is this reason for Monaco

Monaco is probably the best place for sports fans to see hot babes on TV, both in the paddock and in the harbor. I'm sure there are pretty girls who attend the Indy 500 too - some wild ones too, back when the Snake Pit was still a big deal. There are also some delicious looking girls who attend the Coke 600 race in Charlotte. It's just that ABC tends to not focus on the Indy 500 girls the same way that Speedvision (REALLY!) used to, and Speed Channel does now, when it comes to the babes of Monaco. Speedvision even showed an inadvertent boob shot several years ago, about which the resident perv, David Hobbs, made several comments. A topless girl on a yacht in the harbor was laying on her stomach, and happened to roll over just as the camera got her in focus. Not a big deal, but not something you typically see at any other race.

Here's Jessiqa Pace:

She was the "Martini girl" a couple of years ago. Pretty girls are a dime a dozen at the Monaco GP. But even at Monaco, she caused a stir a couple of years ago because several drivers complained that her picture on the billboard at the Loews hairpin was "too distracting". When guys who date supermodels and pop stars complain that a girl is pretty enough to distract them while racing, that's saying something. And that billboard hasn't gone back up in that location since. :1orglaugh

Jessiqa Pace Martini Billboard Causes F1 Distraction & Hamilton Wreck!

But (IMO) the fairest of them all is Her Royal Hotness, Charlotte Casiraghi, grand-daughter of Grace Kelly and daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco. :drool2:

For scenic value monaco but the race is usually boring. For racing give me Indy.

Even though I'm a bigger F1 fan than Indy Car fan these days, I'd have to agree with that, Zeeblofowl. I just wish that Indy Car could get back to the days when there was chassis and engine competition. But at least it's not a pure spec racing series anymore. Too bad they've pretty much cancelled plans to open up the chassis rules and allow different body kits for the spec Dallara chassis next season. That series really needs to take it up a notch if they want Indy to return to the glory days of old.

BTW, I'd have to say that the best race in Monaco (for racing's sake) is usually the GP2 race. Those guys are insane!

Would love to see the chassis opened up but Mr. George doesn't want the spending to grow to F1 levels. But I believe in the long run it will hurt the series. What they need is to somehow lure Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon into the Series to get some star power into the fold, it isn't going to happen but it would mean more butts in the seats.

Monaco GP is the best raceway ever. They tried to get this adrenaline on Valencia and Singapore but it didn't work. Monaco GP still the best

Tony George? Probably (still) the most hated man in North American formula car circles. He's the recovering coke addict that pretty well killed open wheel formula car racing in this country. The teams don't have the money to buy anything now mainly because him and that gang of gomers at IMS fucked things up so bad when they formed the IRL. How bad of a fuck-up does a fellow have to be to make his own mother eventually fire his ass? But yeah, I heard something about the old woman letting him back on the Board of Directors. But Randy Bernard is running the Indy Car Series now - Tony Boy isn't allowed to have a hand in running things any longer. I guess 15 years of money down Tony's rat hole, and still not making a profit, was enough for old Mari Hulman. Mario Andretti said that Newman-Haas' budget, when both he and Nigel Mansell were with the team in the early 90's, was about $30 million - and the team was flush with cash to pay the drivers good salaries, buy multiple new chassis every season and even make a lot of their own parts. I used to visit as many CART teams as I could back then and it was amazing the stuff they had. But the ratings were high and the sponsors were happy to fork over the cash every year. But once Tony "Boy George" formed the IRL, the ratings sank, the fans left in droves and the sponsors & money left. Then the ride buyers and attention seeking hacks like Danica showed up. Things have gotten a little bit better the past couple of years. But the ratings, even for Indy (from 10's back in the 90's to barely a 4 now... about where Long Beach was back in the day), are still in the cellar. The average race gets about the same ratings as a Grand Am race these days. The NASCAR Truck Series gets better ratings and the Nationwide Series easily beats the average Indy Car race. You'd have been labeled a heretic if you'd suggested any such thing was possible back in the early to mid 90's. So the sponsors aren't going to step up their spending until the series can show that it has some relevance with the public again.

What they need is to somehow lure Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon into the Series to get some star power into the fold, it isn't going to happen but it would mean more butts in the seats.

Yeah, somebody with a name and some talent, right? Gordon and Stewart are probably a bit too old (and rich) to do it. People hoped that Dale, Jr. would just sit in a car at Indy (like Stewart did a few years back), or maybe even start a team now that Chevy is back in the game. I'm not confident that any of the big NASCAR names would give the Indy Car Series a second thought, as far as driving. But if the ICS was smart (and they really aren't) they'd pay Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Stewart, et al to start teams. Just attach their names to some teams in the series and pay them to show up to a few races. Seriously. Remember when Chip Ganassi did that with Joe Montana around '95 or '96? And Dale Coyne had Walter Payton as an owner (a real owner) back in the glory days. Hell, try anything while this thing still has some life in it. Do you remember when CART IndyCar races were star-studded events? Hell, you could go to a race and see Elle Macpherson, Christie Brinkley, Billy Joel, Sly Stallone and other A-listers hanging out. Now you might see one of the Kardashian sisters turning tricks behind a grandstand (or whatever it is that they do to make money). Yeah, we definitely need some blessings and some help.
