I have been thinking on this and I’m sure this post may get some people thinking and may just piss more than a few off.
Below are some of my thoughts, I will undoubtedly ramble on at times here or go off on a tangent, but I hope the basic message will be clear.
Isn’t it time for the industry to step up and make a concerted effort to do something about this?
I know of quite a few models and photographers who do make the effort to have any of their work that is found listed on a forum for downloading removed from the file host, but let’s be honest, the amount of material they get removed is a drop in the ocean compared to everything else.
Especially when some of the larger site owners are of the opinion that there are so many places where their work can be illegally downloaded, it’s not worth the effort to get any files removed.
Of course it will take time and considering how bad the problem has been allowed to get, a hell of a lot of effort to make a significant dent in the mountain of available illegal downloads. That doesn’t mean it should not be done.
Some on reading this so far will be thinking someone who downloads illegally isn’t someone who’d be joining my site anyway, so I’m not losing out.
But you are. The majority of the serial uploaders on forums are earning money from other people downloading your work or the work you paid a photographer & model for. You’re putting in the effort and their getting paid for it.
Now I’m not saying all forums are bad, there are a couple where the majority of the images or videos that are available cannot be found anywhere else. This could be because they never were online or the source material is so old that the online forum is the only place it can be found. Making the occasional forum a good place to help keep the history of the adult industry alive and kicking.
I am also aware that on occasion a model has to resort to trawling through a forum to see the results of some work she has carried out for a large site. This is probably me being very naive but I’d have hoped that sites would let models see how their time and effort has turned out. I know this isn’t the case, but it would be nice.
Let’s look at another issue that can be linked to downloads.
Every time some scumbag commits some sort of physical or sexual crime, porn gets blamed for making him that way. You can hardly look at a newspaper right now without there being some story about how porn is giving the under aged an unrealistic image of sex.
Why not take some steps to make sure that the next time the lynch mob starts shouting for all porn to be banned, you as an industry can turn around and say, we’re doing something to ensure that only those old enough are accessing our material. Make sure that you can go to the authorities and say, “We’re working to get our material off file hosts, what are you doing about illegal downloading?”
I have a thought or two on how to begin the long process of finding work and killing the download links, but not being someone directly affected by the problem, I’ll be secretive in case someone steels it.
Just to hammer this point, these are some my thoughts on the issue.
