Hotlinking?

I was wondering if someone could give a really good detailed explanation what hotlinking is and isn't. Examples would be helpful.

I've been here awhile and I still don't really understand this, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one.

Did a search and didn't really find a good, plain, easy to understand answer...so I'm asking here!
