I was clicking on a link in Fav Babes for a Playmate oic posted, and suddenly my screen was filled with a message from Homeland Security.
Busted, it said. I was caught using 1) ***** Porn, 2) trying to infringe on a copyright, or 3) using ******* software.
First clue...none of the above.
Then, it informed me my pc (or laptop) was locked (it was) and I had only 1 option.
Pay a $300 fine immediately, using Walmart, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, something called MoneyPac. (OK, stop laughing. Many are caught believing this and don't have time to think.)
Not paying means in 48 hours I'll be prosecuted and not allowed to pay a fine. By now I'm grinning, this is pretty good. Not good enough, but pretty good.
So, I started working on getting my laptop back.
(I was warned that any attempts to go around this lockout would result in a complete format of my hard drive.)
I did a Kapersky Boot disk, after my Avira rescue worked for a few hours.
It didn't remove it, it came back. So after using Spybot to remove 2 hijacker files, it was dormant for a day, but returned.
So...I did a recovery back to the 22nd, and it's gone now.
My version had every badge in the Federal LE book stacked on the right side...almost realistic enough to get lots of lame people to send the cash!
Since it's been 3 1/2 days since it got on my laptop and no Government agents have shown up with Glocks in hand, I feel safe.
Most articles about this Hijacker are attached to sites that sell antimalware software or services. Could be their malware.
There are links on Google and Bing, they do describe the ransomeware. Read only! No need to buy anything.
Here's the scary message...

To unlock the computer you are obliged to pay a fine of $300. You must pay the fine through MoneyPak.
You have 48 hours to pay the fine. If the fine has not been paid, you will become the subject of criminal prosecution without the right to pay the fine. The Department for the Fight Against Cyberactivity will confiscate your computer and take You to Court.
PS: I keep nearly ALL my stuff on about 5 TBs of external hard drives, and almost nothing on my laptop. So recovery was no big deal for me. Formatting either.
If you keep everything on your computer seek smart help if infected.
