Help me to understand how to Prevent - Teen Pregnancy

You remember *****i, Usha? The bubbly, lively ** year old? I found her at 'Ushar Ava', two months pregnant, thrown out by their parents. Thanks to you and the councilor, she is now here, but stubborn enough not to talk about that scum who made her pregnant. If my intuition is right, he is married. What an animal will take advantage of a girl of that age?
I look at her and the small children with cerebral palsy and feel what you actually was. A crusader against injustice. This is worth living for. I realize what a selfish person I was.
Hope you two are well, wherever you are. My evenings are spent at your place. Be there with us. I need you.
Love

I have deleted the name and the age of the girl, but all others are fact. Presently I'm involved with a center which deals with Teenage pregnancy. Will you please help me by suggesting how to prevent/reduce the problem? How to educate the girls and the guys to prevent them. What type of program should I go for apart from the school sex-education part. The incidence is rising, so is suicide of the young girls.

Depends on what your asking for and trying to prevent.
Is it teens from having sex at all or is it teens having sex that leads to pregnancy?

If it's the former the rate of teen pregnancy will not be abated. But if we get real and accept that many teens are going to have sex, a lot can be done.Educate them about the severe consequences of having a baby at a young age.Educate them about all the different forms of birth control available and make those readily available to them like having free condoms available. And finally do all we can to eliminate any stigma atached to having an abortion if all else fails.I don't know how old the the 2 month pregnant girl is in your example but IMO she should be encouraged to really consider terminating the pregnancy, before she gets further along.

Abortion, plain and simple.

I don't know about your funds. But the doll program appears to be effective. If teenagers realize what it takes to have a baby - that it essentially is a 24/7 job, they tend to take better care of contraception.

I went through the write up. It's interesting and definitely helpful.

It looks like the a capital investment of $5000 for the dolls and another $2000 as working & administrative expenses, if I can not arrange for donations and/or sponsors. I can do it on my own. But what about down the line? So sponsors and ads and grants.

But there is a high incidence of non-school going children. So how about social programs?

Give some tips friends.

This raises another question... How easy/difficult is it in India to get condoms/the pill?

Boys & girls will have sex, either with eachother or with people that are older than themselves. Unless contraception is cheap and can be acquired easily, a lot of young boys & girls won't bother. For girls it's a bit harder (a lot?) since they have to visit a doctor for a prescription & then have to visit the apothecary to get the pill, whereas condoms can be bought almost anywhere (in the Western world anyway).

I agree with Greg. Try a doll program, but also tell them where they can get contraception if they don't know already & also tell both the boys & the girls that leaving the church before the singing begins isn't a safe method to prevent pregnancy.

To me one of the biggest problems is parents - parents who refuse to allow their teens access to birth control because 1) they think somehow that encourages promiscuity, or 2) they want to cling to the delusion that their child is an innocent who has no need for birth control because she/he couldn't possibly be sexually active [when most often they are]. I don't know what the answer for that is, other than addressing the parents of teens with very straight and practical talk.

If God is unable to do it who is I to succeed.

She is underage, so I can not divulge the information. In the present case termination is not possible because of malnutrition.

Very easy. Any road side stall have it. But the problem is awareness.

Our religious system is not as organized as Christianity.

Abortion, plain and simple.

As I understood, it's traumatic and is life threatening in case of under-developed reproductive system.

Christianity may be well organised, but if it were up to the hardcore Christians contraception would be forbidden.

I assume you were talking about leaving the church before the singing begins...

This is merely a saying. It means exiting the vagina before the boy orgasms.

I don't know what ways exist to perform an abortion, but if possible (I don't know if it's physically possible or (& this applies to this case only) financially possible) get her to have a caesarean section.

Thanks for the clarification. Usha would have understood you in a heart beat. But it's not full proof.

Should I go for distributing free diaphragms? But how many would attend? The social stigma will stop them to join in.

And C-section also is a problem because of under developed ovary. It will mature as the day's go and C-section will be possible at the time of delivery. But that too is critical.

Will a program to educate the parents do? How to go about it, without telling them off?

IMHO, tell them off. If they are to naive to admit when they are at fault they need a reality check! I think the problem with a lot of children today isn't the children at all. As the saying goes "The apple doesn't fall from the tree"...

Stop have unprotected sex when your not ready for the conquences. Actually I think it is quite disturbing that your posting this girl's problem on the internet. Even though you got rid of her name and age, assuming she is under 18. There is a certian trust factor that you violated.

Wait until after marriage. That is the only way to prevent it. :hatsoff:
