HDTV Hookup

I just got a 42" LG HDTV and playing around with it...being tech illiterate- trying to get higher quality sound off my DVD player, instead of Mono- how do I hook the cables so I get HQ sound? Do I have to buy one of those HDMI cables? The thing is, there is not an HDMI slot off of the DVD player- there is a slot in back of the TV though, but not the player...I am using the colored patch cables, but it is not working..

Colored as in: Red (Right audio), White (Left audio) [channels]; and Yellow (Video)? or
Colored as in: Green [Y] , Blue [Pb/Cb], Red [Pr/Cr]?

If you say the latter option, you'll still need the 1st option. But if you have a Digital Coaxial (Orange color) on both, then that's better than the 1st one (also referred to as RCA plugs). But if you have a Optical out (squarish' looking peg w/ grooves on 3 sides) that option is the best for sound reproduction; other than the HDMI. Both the Digital Coaxial and Digital Optical connections would be best if placed into a receiver/amplifier, for even better sound quality.

what the fuck you lookin at?
without the HDMI out on the DVD player you can only use the colored component cables. Buy a blu-ray player, they are cheap enough now. Also most will up convert your dvds to like HD quality!

the back of my DVD player (Toshiba DVD/VCR combo - Model: SD-295) has an S-video outlet (round, with 4-5 small pinholes). Does this cable have a square end that hooks into the HDMI slot on the HDTV? All I need is better sound quality off my DVD/VCR player...it seems like now it is mono, and I have to turn the sound way up, which I'd rather not do...

No, it would hook to an S-video input if your tv has one, which I doubt. HDMI hooks only to HDMI. Maybe get a surround sound system? Again, not terribly expensive if you shop smart and you could use your DVD player and hook the colored component cables to that for better sound than through your tv. Tv's never have good quality speakers.

For the EMPEROR!!
If you have a PS3 or Xbox you can connect that with HDMI to your HDTV and use the console as a DVD/BD player and your HDTV's sound should be better than a DVD player.

A surround sound system would be the way to go though.

Seems like an outdated model. I would upgrade to one with an HDMI out and also make sure you check your tv audio settings.

Have you tried another cable? If the sound is really low and in mono it sounds like the cable might be damaged and there´s a short circuit in it. Do you have anything else hooked up to the tv (video games, another VCR)? If you do, then unhook those things first and check if there´s any improvement.

There is nothing strange about that question. There are cable converters for just about every connection you can find.

I'd just like to add that if you do get an HDMI cable don't be fooled by anything/anyone who tells you that you need to get one of those super-expensive ones. If you got to Best Buy or some other store like that, they'll try to sell you cables that cost as much as $80, but a $6 one like this will work just fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119253

You can actually buy her?
