Go and see one of the popular ones. Make yourself familiar with the story. Listen to it beforehand. This will greatly add to your enjoyment. The opera and symphony are having hard time finding younger people there are always deals going as the date of the shows approach.

If you do go (and this is just my opinion) make an effort. Wear a jacket and a shirt with a collar.

I would say Phantom is a musical rather than a proper opera.

I went to see Chinese Opera recently, it was awful but I was trying to get into a chinese girls pants. I failed.
