Has anyone been surprised by how much comic books costs these days?

Comics cost nowadays $2.99. Back in the 1990's when I was huge collector of comic books it would cost anywhere between $1.25-1.95. Who in their right mind, during this recession, can afford a $2.99 comic book? No wonder many comic book shops have gone out of business. Three bucks a pop is just absurd. And these are not collector's items, either. It is just the basic monthly comic book.

I think the industry would do much better they sold comics in places other than dedicated comic book places like they used to. I remember when you could go into a normal grocery store and there was a rack of them you could buy cheap, and they wonder why kids don't buy comics anymore. Heck, even if they had to go with the old less quality and non-shiny paper they used to use to get them cheaper it might help also.

It would also help the industry tremendously if they would just stop doing stupid crap and having countless gimmicks and multiple different titles for the same character.

Gonna have to agree. It is not enough just to tell a good story. There always, always has to be some angle to sell the comics. They come up with garbage like embossed cover, polybags, comic cards inserted into the comic, and then say it is "Sure to go up in value" and become a collector's item. If they print 500,00 copies of the same title it isn't gonna go up in value because it's been overproduced. And is it really necessary to have so many titles of the same character? When I used to collect comics DC would roll out Superman: The Man of Steel, The Adventures of Superman, Action Comics, Superman and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow. With Batman it was Detective Comics, Batman, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and Batman: Shadow of the Bat. Is it necessary to roll out four titles per month for one character?

I've never bought/read comics, but $2.99 doesn't sound like that much to me. I suppose if you made weekly trips to the shop and bought 10 or 12 of them each time it could get expensive...

I'm amazed that women actually like ass to mouth, and even more amazed that people want to see it done. These latest sales figures might make your head explode in amazement.

You still read comic books yourself! You got yourself an entire collection of Fantastic Four comic books in your house and after you read 'em you put them in your mylar polybags with backing boards, trying to keep 'em in near mint/mint condition because you are hoping those comics are going to go up in value in the not-too-distant future.

Have you ever tried web comics? Most are free, you often see diverse and interesting stories, mostly original *hint hint* (see my signature). Plus they are often not crammed with adverts for bubblegumgooosourdrops and other kiddy nonsense that usually renders buying a comic from marvel or dc completely pointless. Oh and if you buy an image or dark horse comic, just expect there to be as many ads little story too! If you really want to buy dead wood comics, then should buy graphic novels, most libraries have em. I am thinking of dumping my collection in a land fill somewhere, apart from one or two comics (The devils rejects#1) most are crap (and I supposedly have some decent comics too which I forked out just as much as you are complaining about, if not more, because I live in the UK, and direct edition comics here are £3.50)

i was thinking the same thing.

i recently got back into a few comics. they are fuckin outrageous. especially for how they are. it used to be a comic had a lot of text. not anymore.

Well, it depends on the comic and content. It can become a top comic to collect. Like the debut of a character.

Comics were better when they were all-ages and could be sold in a variety of venues. Not just a specialties market.

tragic ^.^

Are you being sarcastic? :nono:

Anders reads comics.

Think about who much money your grandfather or father would have if they had collected comics when they were younger.

Go back to the code and make the "adult" comics a specialties market.

What do you think a lot of people do or did? New comics every week. The cost starts adding up.

The nice thing is that the comic store here in Saskatoon gives you a discount on paperbacks, but it's just 10% so Suicide Squad 1-2 just cost me $5.80. I never even bought comics all that often when I was young and I remember being able to go down to the pharmacy and getting a comic for a dollar. You'd think with every second page being an ad they'd be cheap, but no...
