Guns don't kill people, 4 years old kill people

4-year old fatally shoots wife of Tenn. sheriff’s deputy accidentally

The deputy was showing his personal gun collection to family members when his 4-year-old nephew picked up a weapon and fired, striking the victim

A Tennessee deputy's four-year-old nephew shot and killed his wife during a weekend cookout at their home, police said.

Josephine Fanning, 47, and the boy walked into a bedroom where her husband Daniel was showing his personal gun collection to a relative in Lebanon. Unaware that the child entered, the sheriff's deputy left a loaded pistol unattended on the bed.

"Split second, we're talking about seconds for that kid to walk in that room unbeknownst to them, grab that gun and it goes off," said Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan.

The little boy picked up the firearm in the Lebanon home and fired one bullet, striking Fanning. The officer desperately performed CPR in repeated failed attempts to revive the love of his life, whom he wed last year.

Josephine Fanning was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday evening.

Daniel Fanning typically keeps his weapons in a secure gun safe, according to Bryan.

"He took all the precautions, he's a trained law enforcement officer, trains with weapons all the time," Bryan told local station WTVF.

The gun was Daniel Fanning's personal weapon and he was not on duty at the time. He is a school resource officer at Sam Houston Elementary School and the school officials said that the family was in their prayers, according to KFVS.

"It would take a blind judge not to see how much he loved his wife," said neighbor Melvin Roberts.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

6-year-old N.J. boy accidentally shot by 4-year-old friend has died, police say

A 6-year-old boy who was accidentally shot in the head by a 4-year-old playmate on April 8 has died from his wounds, authorities said Tuesday night.

Ocean County prosecutor's office spokesman Al Della Fave confirmed Brandon Holt had died but said he couldn't provide further details. Toms River police Chief Michael Mastronardy said Holt was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. Tuesday, nearly 24 hours after the shooting occurred in a neighborhood that residents described as "very quiet."

The 4-year-old, whose name was withheld, was not injured.

The younger boy's mother called 911 to report the shooting, Coronato said.

Coronato said it was too early in the investigation to know whether anyone would be charged. He would not say who owned the gun or speculate on how the 4-year-old got it.

Mastronardy called the shooting tragic and said it affected the whole community, a sentiment shared by those who live there.

One resident said the two families had not lived in the neighborhood for long and she did not know them well.

"I'm sad for the children involved and their families, but I'm angry with whoever owns that gun and allowed a little child to get hold of it. A 4-year-old can't load a gun," said Debi Coto, who lives a few doors down. "I had just been telling my sister how nice it is to see kids playing together and enjoying themselves, and then this happens."

Coto said the 4-year-old's mother seemed very upset in the minutes after the shooting and appeared to be trying to comprehend what had happened.

The shooting came just days after a 4-year-boy in Tennessee grabbed a loaded gun at a family cookout and accidentally shot to death the wife of a sheriff's deputy, and amid debate over gun control laws in the wake of December's Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre.

There are, I believe, a frightening number of stories of dogs shooting people too. It's a sign of how careless people can be--why, in the case of the first story, would you even feel the need to show off your "collection" in the presence of children if it's being kept for a practical reason? I get that he's a sheriff's deputy, but beyond a personal sidearm I'd imagine these things would be better suited to being kept in the sheriff department's building.

These stories are not reasons for gun control, frankly. As much as I'd like there to be very strong gun laws, these stories are merely examples of people being stupid. Similar stories exist for cars, for various power tools, and so forth. We're not about to ban jigsaws.

It is often said that guns are not the problem - people are. The argument behind it, while technically true, is intellectually disingenuous. I disagree with both premises, in any case - guns aren't the biggest problem. Gun culture is. Why, indeed, would one feel the need to show off their collection? Because in the US, it's cool to do that. We have people that vote solely for who the gun lobby tells them to (see: NRA 'gradings'), gun culture is so prevalent.

So I mostly agree with dirk; the stories in themselves aren't really pressing a case for gun control, per se; they're just more examples of how dangerous our gun culture is - and legislation isn't going to change the culture.

Which was my point entirely--a practical gun-owner, one who wants something for defence in that off-chance you'd have it when you need it, doesn't have to flaunt it. You're not defending yourself, your home or your family by showing off your overcompensation like that. To even own a collection is, before you mistreat it like that story shows, pretty unnecessary--if you need to defend your home, the luxury of choice between the armalite or the browning isn't going to help. A culture which wants to stand up and defend its right to arm itself should be mature enough to realise that responsibility is its strongest argument, and that incidents like this can be avoided by reducing the perception machismo and overcompensation that are considered part and parcel of being a gun advocate, focussing instead on safety and responsibility.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
This guy was careless, and needs to suffer the consequences. That said, no amount of gun control would have stopped it...he was a cop, and would've still been allowed to own firearms.

So Johan, how come you didn't rush in here with the breaking news yesterday, about 14 students wounded in a knife attack at a collage yesterday? Some douche bag PROVES it's not guns that are to blame for violence, and you selectively neglect to point that out? I wonder, does france make you register x-acto knives? Since Sam, or Will aren't here to tell you what a dumb fuck you are...I will. Dumb fuck!

the 2nd one was real close to my house.
horrible incidents.

It is, and it's a damn shame shit like this happens. Yo bad the Op didn't post it out of concern, or compassion for the tragedy or the lose, but out of joy, at being able to point out gun tragedies to further an agenda. No better then bloomberg, obama, or the rest...and just as shitty a thing to do as Will wishing mass murder.

it's just part of the psychological make up of people like him.
pretend to care and promote your ideas based on that perception........

Mass cutting...no one was stabbed with an Exacto knife. And the correct comparison to mass shootings and deaths would be "how many were killed when an armed teacher/person stopped the attempted shooting?". Then the zero body count would be correct.
If I set off a small pipe bomb in a close environment (say, a bus or a classroom) with the usual shrapnel used by bombers to max kill, I expect the kill score would be pretty high.
Hangnail infections are pretty deadly as well, I hear.
No gun restrictions are gonna save anyone as most people thinking with their actual brains knows. We need to be ready for bad acts, not wail and wring our hands after the fact.
I can do horrible things if I set my mind to it, and that's a fact. As can most anyone, ask any Green Beret or SpecFor member. I have a few paperbacks obtained from an Army Navy surplus that gives me several options for guerilla resistance if Red Dawn ever becomes a reality, or Otrama comes around to round up J Napolitano's list of security threats.
(WHY did she say they need over a billion rounds of ammo? I missed that explanation, I guess.)
I used to have a (legal) gun group, before my last financial meltdown saw a sell off of collected stuff. No one ever died from my ownership of an AK47 (Beijing), Glock .40, 1911a1 Springfield Armory Custom .45 ACP, Beretta .380 13 shot, and my little buddy Taurus .38 2 " snub 5 shot ... sweet little shooter. Drilled many large sheets of paper with that murderous kill machine...just in case.
Not to mention my bladed weapons groups, some of which I still have. Slaughtered many a Mango and Papaya in Central America with my Bolo, but must confess I never drew any mammalian blood.
Sorry...I just don't see any logic in anti-gun arguments so far, still waiting for a logical non-hysterical "not Lib" to make some...car deaths never made me afraid of cars, I can drive responsibly and that's that.

Only if the teacher stops him even before he starts shooting but this would probablt not have happened sinbce the Lanza get in the school with his guns in his hands si he would have had enough time to shoot a few kids before the teacher would have shot him. And he may also have seen the teacher grabbing his gun and may have shot him before...

this is getting stupid. no need for another debate.
people are gonna have guns no matter how many laws you want to have.
whether they are handguns, bazookas. legal or illegal accidents are going to happen.

using some of these accidents, in this case where a baby died, to promote your belief that more gun laws are needed is in extremely bad taste.

and vodka, you creepy pest, to make a joke about it is deserving of a serious ass kicking.

No dude, the kid picked up the gun an adult carelessly set down, and accidentally shot a law enforcement officers wife. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
Surely this is something that we can all get behind.
You can only get behind me if you've got 8 inches or if you're Dirk.
