First written in 1984 by Leonard Cohen, 'Hallelujah' is a song that interweaves Biblical imagery with themes of sex and love. It's gone on a long journey from obscurity to a popular classic, and is now probably one of the most covered songs of all time.
Jason Castro's performance on American Idol earlier this year led to Jeff Buckley's cover version of it occupying the top spot on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart over a decade after the singer's death. 'Hallelujah' has also been chosen as the winner's song for Britain's X-Factor, and it will in all likelihood end up being the Christmas #1 this year (barring a surprise from Geraldine, Leona Lewis or maybe even Jeff Buckley again).
