In your insignificant opinion, who is the most gifted songwriter in the history of popular music?

{no "other" option included with a purpose}

Kurt Cobain? C'mon. If he hadn't killed himself he'd just be another washed up aging rockstar that people were sick of.

Nirvana was a fucking great rock band, but that is as far as it goes.

i strongly disagree with you, dave.
the leader of the one of the greatest bands ever shouldn't be called "another rockstar".

Nirvana is one of the moments that changed history of rock:

and Nirvana is one of the "Inmortals": the greatest artists of all time

now, all of the lyrics of Nirvana were written by Kurt, so, he must be doing something good...

I say Billy Corgan. But that's of course just my opinion.

Hard to pick lol. While I am huge beatles fan and of course Dylan was another poet of my youth. But I had to go with the Gershwins. The early guys laid all the groundwork for what came after IMO and need to be acknowledged for that.

Of those listed, I'll say Dylan #1, Springsteen #2. I might take Billy Joel over all of them though.

I always thought Nirvana was over-rated. But I guess we wouldn't have horse races if everybody agreed on everything.

Out of the list, Burt Bacharach is #1, followed by Lennon/McCartney. It's pretty impossible to say who the best ever is though, without giving some sort of parameters. There's the different genres of music to consider, and who's had the most overall influence, etc.

With such a diverse list,I'm kinda surprised that John Sebastian's name isn't on this list. And what about Jim Croce and Cat Stevens?

wow, I actually the first person i thought of was Springsteen , and low and behold he's on your list.
nice list,I can't decide however.
Maybe I'll drive all night and think about it.

Lennon and McCartney. They had a knack for writing songs that are still relevant 4 decades after they were written.

I say Billy Corgan. But that's of course just my opinion.

I'd agree with you, since I used to be a HUGE fan of SP, but, ever since the first time I had to deal with Billy Corgan and realized what a conceited, self-centered prick he really is, I just can't think of him as the "greatest" anything other than "greatest fuckbag that I'd like to lock in a portable toilet and set on fire".

Bob Dylan, Lennon/McCartney and Jagger/Richards.

Brian Wilson-Gary Usher-Roger Christian.
However neither of the options is a 20th century Beethoven except maybe George Gershwin.
There have been many great classical composers in the 1900s too.
