Who's the greatest runner of all time ?

Usain Bolt ? Michael Johnson ? Carl Lewis ? Jesse Owens ?

The guy who's breaking his own records seemingly without trying every time he's on television.

I assume you mean "sprinter"? In that case, I'd vote Carl Lewis.

Otherwise, where are Abebe Bakila and Paavo Nurmi? Bakila is the greatest marathon runner ever but Nurmi is the greatest runner of all time in my opinion.

Yeah, I mean sprinter. Otherwise I would have add Haile Gebreselassie in the poll.

The funny thing is that Bolt won both 100 and 200 metres the exact same days as last year and beat both world records both last year and this year.

Carl lewis right now but if Bolt dominates 2012 Summer Olympics, he will overtake Lewis

I think Bolt has already overtaken CL , havent you seen the times he runs in!!!

Bolt is the greatest runner ever he holds the world record , end of!!

Now if your talking about who has had the best career it has to be CL for the amount of medals he has won!!!

Greatest runner of all time? BOLT

As long as we are talking about short distance running and not counting longer distance runners I say it's Bolt.

I go by three criteria.

1. Total speed and quickness
2. How much greater they were compared to contemporary competition. Also taking into account that hundredths of second let alone tenths of a second better mean more now than they did even back a few decades ago.
3. Longevity at being near the best and especially the best.
4. They are good at more than one race and can do at least two of the 100, 200, and 400 meter races.

Bolt already beats everybody else like Lewis, Johnson, and Owns, in the first two criteria, and in a few years baring injury, quitting, or some other strange breakdown will have enough to almost equal everybody else in the third. He also has world records in the 100 and 200 meters. He's tenths of a second, TENTHS, better than anybody else on the planet. To put that into perspective he's probably better than whoever comes up second in a race than the second place person is better than the 10,000th best sprinter in the world. If he ever improves on his start out of the gate he might even get significantly better still, so even now it’s not like he already tapped out as far as ability.

Jesse Owens. He thumbed his nose at Hitler.

the cheetah? the gazzell? no wait, its a high school student who grabbed a twelve pack from the store and ran for it.

Distance: Zatopek. So far ahead of his time. 400m: Edwin C Moses - he went over 100 races without losing. Sprint: well Carl Lewis has a shadow over him from his early days with regards doping. Bolt certainly has the potential. Jesse Owens made the biggest splash in 1936 though and there were no games for him to go to in 1940.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
I gotta go with Edwin Moses. The length of time he dominated will not be beat.
