Bizarre Factors That Predict Every Presidential Election

The Washington Redskins enjoy one of the most remarkable reputations in political history due to a little correlation called the "Redskins rule." It's as simple as it is spooky: If the Redskins win their last home game before election day, then the party in power gets to hold on to the White House. If the Redskins lose, no matter how close the game, the opposition party takes over.

You could write it off as blind chance if, say, it worked for three or four elections ... but the rule has incredibly held true for every damn election since 1940, except one (and we'll get to it in a minute). So this is slowly entering gypsy curse territory.

Because why the hell would this possibly work? Maybe you could say that the incumbent is re-elected when things are going well for the country, and when things are going well, the crowd will be more jazzed to root for football, and the positive crowd makes the team play better. But why would it only apply to that one game? Keep in mind that it has nothing to do with how good the team is overall -- the 1976 Redskins only lost two games at home all year, but by God, one of those two losses was right before election day, and therefore the Republican incumbent lost and Democrats took back the presidency. What the hell?

As for the one exception, it was in 2004, when the Green Bay Packers beat the Redskins but George W. Bush held on to the presidency. The fact that this was the one exception actually makes it weirder, because as some of you vividly remember, Bush was president but had actually lost the popular vote in 2000 (winning only due to the Supreme Court craziness over Florida's recount). As the guy credited with discovering the theory, Steve Hirdt, points out, if you make the rule refer not to the party in power, but to the party that won the popular vote in the previous election, it suddenly has a perfect 18-for-18 record predating World War II.

Playing Carolina Panthers (1-6) this Sunday. Deal with it Conservatives. :D

As a republican and cowboys fan I never cheer for the redskins regardless of who's the president.

But I wonder if the politically correct people in the league planned this in advance and fixed it in a way that the redskins would play a weaker opponent just in time for the election :dunno:

Of course they did. Everyone knows that Obama has the NFL in his back pocket. High level campaign officials went to Roger Goodell and showed jim unreleased footage of Obama in the Situation Room during the Benghazi attack eating peanut M&Ms and chanting "Allah Akbar" to scare the shit out of him. And it worked. Voila! The Redskins get the game they need before election day.

You guys think us Dems are pussies. We're not. We're subtle. And Goodell gets to drive to work without having to check his car for for explosives. In Liberal parlance it's called a win-win.

I would point out that the Panthers went 4-2 over the final six weeks of the season last year and were a trendy pick as a team which could "take the next step" this year. We are now aware that such notions were risible but, at the time the schedule was set, few people were thinking that Carolina would be so completely awful this season. If there were a conspiracy within NFL circles, the Redskins would have drawn Jacksonville or Cleveland.

Yeah, Cam Newton has a severe case of sophomore slump with a shot of piss-ant, asshole attitude to go with it. Get the fucking towel off your head, watch the game, and support your teammates.

Carolina fans better hope this year is an anomaly and he returns to his previous form eventually. Otherwise, they're stuck with a mediocre, immature douche at QB.

Forget the election, RG3 cost me my fantasy matchup this week. No TDS, dude?

You were playing Carolina. C'mon, man!

We'll see come Tuesday.

Exactly what I would have said if it had been the other way around.

Anyway, I didn't watch the whole game, but I did watch the second half of it when I was having lunch. Did the Redskins throw the game or something? They didn't play as good as a 3-5 team playing a 1-6 team, for a moment it seemed that the W/L records were backwards or something. Or did RGIII take whatever pill Obummer took right before the first debate? :dunno: I mean, he did make some good plays but I was surprised by the Panthers' defense.

I mean, if the 'Skins had played my Cowboys I'm sure they would have won big time.

Okay, Sam, as much as I'd like to see a change of direction in..... I was going to say "leadership" but the current White House occupant hasn't shown any, I guess I'll say change to actual leadership, a game is only a game. I don't put too much faith in it, victory or loss for the 'Skins it may all be just a big coincidence..... too big. Huge coincidence. I mean, it hasn't really missed for how long? Since 1936? Interesting. Very interesting. Predicting the popular vote winner? Hmmm, maybe Romney will win the popular vote but not the electoral vote? Of course that would mean that Hussein would be illegitimate, selected not elected, with no real mandate. Food for thought.
