I think it's even better when you're contacted by a family member who you haven't heard from in years and they want to borrow a huge sum of money. Then they bring up that they heard you had looked at an expensive car and if you'd delay that purchase and help them out, they'll pay you back in 6 months or so. And even try to lay some guilt on you by saying that they're going to lose their house if you can't help them (instead of buying a car they don't think you really need).
