Georgian tanks have entered Chechnya

Georgian tanks have entered Russia's breakaway region of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, says Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Russia has been fighting separatists in order to regain control of the province, which had declared independence since the 1990s.

Georgian troops in the Chechen Republic capital said their artillery had begun firing at Russian ******, Georgian news agencies reported.

Georgia's president earlier promised to defend the citizens in the Chechen Republic.

Georgia's defence ministry said more than 10 of its peacekeeping troops in the Chechen Republic had been ****** and 30 wounded in the Russian offensive. At least 15 civilians are also reported dead.

'Clear intrusion'

Russia's president said 150 Georgian tanks and other vehicles had entered the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.


He told CNN: "Georgia is fighting a war with us in our own territory."

Mr Medvedev, who has called on reservists to sign up for duty, said: "This is a clear intrusion on another country's territory."
