George Orwelll's 1984

for those who have read it, what does it remind you of? I read it in the 7th grade as required reading then again several years ago.

there's a part at the end when the protagonist (I forgot his name) is under interrogation and realizes that his interrogator, and by extension, ingsoc itself, is a lunatic.

based on lunacy. in today's politics what does that merkel you of? Like the idiots on our college campuses and others, who if they REALLY had the courage of their convictions, would light themselves on fire in protest over the fascist who will be sworn in as president in a matter of weeks. Keith Olbermann first of course. and I'd bring the marshmallows.

just some random thoughts while PUI.

Are you directly calling Trump a fascist or are you saying that from the anti Trump peoples point of view?
Just wondering. I wont debate it either way.

There are so many comparisons to make of 2016 and the novel 1984 that I fear if I begin I'll be here all day.
1984 takes place after a huge world war which is not really the case today, or not yet.
But other things are the same.
A small amount controls everything.
Another slightly larger group works for them.
And the rest live under their control.

Endless wars, police state, censurship, revised history, thought police, ruined economy in which everybody must rely on the GOV, a lying and manipulating media.
There is even controlled opposition that the people think is on their side but in reality is just a branch of the ruling classes Ministry of Propaganda. I liken that to Fox news and infowars.

We are basically living in a somewhat toned down 1984 right now, not nearly as extreme but little by little its getting there every day.
All the elements of 1984 are in place and in effect right now.

well there's the two minutes of hate, e.g., CNN, MSNBC, the View etc. devoted to President Elect Trump on a daily basis.

confounded, embarrassed, enraged, trolled and defeated (repeat and rinse) - that is today's left in America. 2016 was absolutely devastating to their agenda. No wonder they've lost their gotdamn minds.

I am beginning to think that 1984 is a blueprint for many instead of a warning.

I'm more of a Ayn Rand guy myself.

Still not sure how Geddy Lee and Neil Peart grew to admire her.

She wasn't exactly a leftist.

I'd agree 100% if you had written 24/7 instead of 2 hours.
It seems were on the same page regarding this. Somewhere along the line we start thinking differently but the basis is the same I think.
Maybe not. But maybe so.

I am beginning to think that 1984 is a blueprint for many instead of a warning.

.

Same as above.
Blueprint to an extant. I think more that Orwell just saw what was happening before most people.
He just had the year wrong.
