Freeware software for making compilations

Hi, I want to know suggestions for freeware for making video compilations. Want something simple as possible to just cut and splice videos together, and maybe add audio. Lots of programs seem bloated and complicated. MP4 joiner leaves seconds of black screen between transitions. Thanks.

Solveigmm worked well for me, although there can be hiccups if there's a new codec. There's a free version you can test out to see if it's for you.

I'm thinking of trying out Machete, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
