The exact date for the actual election is not fixed as of yet. It usually gets set a 3/4th year in advance. It will be either Sunday, the 17th of September or Sunday, the 24th of September, 2017 Elections in Germany are on sundays in general.
If you look up the elections on Wikipedia, you will get some info that is not 100% correct. The SPD is not ready right now, so there is no candidate right now. It can be expected soon, I think

There are talks between The junior partner of the current "Great Coalition" between the CDU/CSU and the SPD, but the SPD wants to break up.
There is potential for a three-party-coalition between the SPD & the Green Party ("Grüne") & the LINKE. A LOT of tough issues to cover and settle on, but for change, well, maybe they can make it.
As you guys noticed, Angela Merkel is stepping up again, she has to be elected as the official candidate of he party yet, but who would challenge her?
