Android Saw Twice As Many Buyers As iPhone Over The Past 3 Months

Head down into the bunkers and lock the door, friends — there be flamewars a comin’. :flame:

The Nielsen Company released a new mobile research report this morning, with at least one big landmark stat within: over the past 3 months, Android has pulled in twice as many new smartphone buyers as the iPhone.

The new-buyers breakdown, over the past 3 months:
  • 56% of those buying a new smartphone bought an Android device
  • 28% bought an iPhone
  • 9% bought BlackBerry
  • 6% bought “Other” (which contains Windows Phone, amongst others)

Of course, these stats really should have a little asterisk tucked somewhere inside. The iPhone is one phone (or two, counting the 3GS), by one manufacturer. Android is, at this point, hundreds of models, across dozens of manufacturers. That’s not said to knock Android in any way — but it’s worth noting that when the pie is split so many ways across so many manufacturers and models within, the iPhone is probably making exponentially more money for Apple than Android phones are for anyone.

Also worth noting, but immeasurable: how many would-be iPhone buyers held off with the knowledge that a new iPhone was not only on the way, but was actually behind its normal release schedule? It’ll be interesting to see these numbers for the next three months.

Good to see the "I" is going down. :D

I always buy Iphones

Even though the Htc's are probably better than the iphone

Iphone has everything that i need, so even though Android has flash etc i still would always buy from apple.

It is the same with the ipad, i got one of those, even though the galaxy tab etc is better.

I'm buying the iphone 5 next month since my contract is up :), i can't wait to see what it's like

I've been doing a lot of research on this recently, actually. I'm about to update, and I'm 100% surely getting an Android. The newest generation are outperforming the IPhones in every way. The data plans are WAY cheaper, and the customer service is a lot, lot, lot better.

I'm sold.

I recently bought a Motorola Photon. It's buggy as hell! In some regards it's almost as bad as my old HTC Hero.

I hope you got talked into it by a salesperson. If you chose it, I may have to respect you less.

Psssht! As if you had any respect for me in the first place...

No, I actually played with several phones at several different companies, and this was the one I liked best. I did some research via Consumer Reports Online (a friend of mine with a membership printed out a bunch of info), and the Photon came up as the highest-rated Android phone that Sprint currently has. It's by no means a bad device, especially when hooked up to the docking station that essentially turns it into a pc, but it has some really annoying bugs:
- It randomly resets itself.
- The keyboard software lags terribly, so you can't actually see what you just typed for a few seconds sometimes.
- It has no accurate way of moving the cursor around the screen, so you're stuck trying to guess where the screen thinks your finger is gonna land. Even when you drag the arrow that comes up to guide the cursor it tends to do what it wants. Accurately selecting text is like pulling teeth.
- The Bluetooth signal gets suddenly disconnected frequently. Over a matter of 3 hours it will drop Bluetooth connectivity at least twice, even when an active device is in use.
- Some applications will not close regardless of how many times I close them with my task killer.
- The battery life spans the length of a rat's dick. During the 45-minute train ride between where I park my car and San Francisco it loses at least 30% battery life, even if I'm not using it the whole time.
- Motorola released a bugged software update a couple weeks ago that, among other things, causes the phone to overheat ridiculously, and actually drains the battery while it's charging. The solution I came up with is to take out the battery (which is a pain in the ass in itself) and reboot it. Sprint's solution is to reformat the phone, lose all my saved information, and avoid downloading software updates.

Gotta love technology.

(One that works.:hairpull:)

Shifty

O.G.
I believe that Android phones are generally at a lower price point vs IPhone and Blackberry.

Thus, more attractive to younger consumers.

I've hated every smart phone I've ever owned. My Blackberry would crash all the time and now this POS Samsung has visual no fucking visual missed-call alert, receives some text messages two and even three times, has crappy sound clarity on the phone and was way too fucking expensive.
