Falling Jobless Rate Masks Long-Term Unemployment Disaster

WASHINGTON -- As the national unemployment rate goes down, Washington seems like it's losing interest in helping the long-term unemployed -- which is too bad, because long-term unemployment is as miserable as ever.

Mike Schillim of Warren, Mich., said he made $65,000 last year as a materials manager for an automotive company. He was let go last December and he's been on unemployment since then. His benefits are about to run out.

"We're not going to have Christmas," he said.

Schillim, 59, contacted HuffPost in response to a story soliciting emails from unemployed Americans. He said he wants people to bear witness to what's happening.

"I don't want people to think we're not looking for jobs," he said in a phone interview, rattling off the names of websites like Monster.com and CareerBuilder as he described the process of flinging resumes into an online void and never getting a response.

More than 4 million Americans had been jobless for six months or longer in November, a slight increase from the previous month, the Labor Department announced Friday. Their ranks have dwindled from a peak of 6.7 million in 2010, but the figure remains historically unprecedented. No recession since the 1950s has seen such a large proportion of the unemployed out of work for so long. Several studies have suggested a person being out of work for several months turns off employers.

In the past week, Schillim said, he's applied for jobs like the one he lost -- he spent 35 years managing materials for automotive companies -- and also for some outside his expertise, such a clerk position a Dollar General store in Grand Rapids.

The job would probably pay a little less than unemployment benefits, he said. "But if I don't get something soon, I won't have anything. The longer I'm unemployed, everything I read [says] people aren't going to hire me. What do I do? Do I become homeless?"

More than a million Americans currently receiving federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation like Schillim will lose their benefits when the program expires on Dec. 28. There is some talk on Capitol Hill about reauthorizing the insurance, which goes to people who've been unemployed six months or longer once they've exhausted their state benefits, but not a lot of optimism. In states with the highest unemployment rates, the combined duration of state and federal benefits is 73 weeks; the maximum will revert to 26 weeks if Congress does nothing.

"Outside of unemployment insurance, I can't think of a single policy the federal government's really enacted to help these people," Mike Evangelist, an analyst for the National Employment Law Project, said in an interview. The worker advocacy group issued a report this week detailing the typical budget of an unemployed household. It noted that benefits kept more than a million workers out of poverty last year.

Schillim gets about $379 per week, but soon that money will disappear. Even if Congress makes a move, Michigan is one of the stingier states when it comes to unemployment insurance, providing 20 weeks of standard state benefits instead of the usual 26.

He's had a few interviews in the past year but the calls have dwindled, Schillim said. In face-to-face interviews, he feels he's at a disadvantage because of his age, duration of unemployment, and his teeth. Schillim said he has lost more than 100 pounds thanks to gastric bypass surgery 12 years ago, but he suffered a somewhat common complication from the procedure when he lost most of his teeth.

He said he lives in cramped house with his wife and three grown sons, who've been able to find some part-time work. If Schillim's benefits run out before he finds a job, he said he might apply for food stamps.

"I didn't apply for them yet because I got boys that's working and because I don't feel it's right," he said. "I don't want to be accused of being a taker."

Not that he feels like much of a maker. "I feel like I'm a hindrance to society," he said. "I'm disposable."

Well georges, the richest people in America have gotten richer in the last 6 years than at any other time in history. Corporations are seeing record profits. This was Ronald Reagans "Trickle Down Economics" which meant that making rich people and corporations richer would create jobs for everyone all the way down the line. But clearly as you have pointed out in your article that isn't true. This also proves beyond question that Obama is not even close to a socialist that the republicans claim him to be.

So you point out that this is happening under Obama but its happening because of Republican strategy.

You can portray Obama as godsaver that is your right, but I will always portray him as a community organizer and a socialist. Hard working and law abiding citizens paying higher taxes so that some lazy and unwilling to work people get free healthcare and social security, this should never exist nor should have never been authorized. Consider yourself as rich and not poor, btw stop being so envious of the rich and blame everything on them. They are rich, it is not your business if they have a big wealth or not. I don't think that you would like that someone brown noses how much dollars in terms of mansions or jewellery or watches you have, it is a part of privacy, end of story. Under the reaganomics, the dollar was at its highest value as far as I can remember and the economy was booming from 1980 till 1988. In real life, you have to be an opportunist and a fine strategist and always favor profit and what is in your interests and never think about a community , if you don't understand that, then I can't do nothing for you. In the USA a lot of people are highly individualistic and dislike mixing themselves with the wrong crowd, they are entitled to this right and you can't blame them for that.

Where did I say Obama is a godsaver? I don't even know what that means? I portray him as someone who has tried to help people who need help, but the christian republicans are dead set against helping anyone but themselves. And georges can I ask you what issue you have with a community organizer? the very definition means "bring community together" is there something wrong with that? I don't see the problem. And again, how can you label him a socialist when the richest Americans have gotten richer under him as president than any other time in history? Corporations are seeing record profits. Have you seen the US stock market in the last 5 years? It has broken it's own record dozens of times. Social Security wasn't invented by Obama. it's been around for 80 years. Did you know that 80% of the people on welfare and food stamps have full time jobs? Those corporate profits are raging because they are paying employees less than they did 10 years ago.

I am in no way jealous of the rich. I do fairly well and have no issue with paying more. You perhaps should consider to stop blaming the poor for all the problems.

America was built on community and working together, you just pointed the main problem, hooray for me and fuck you. That mentality will destroy a nation

The Preamble to the United States Constitution starts with, "We the people", we the people are a community and our Founding Fathers were organizers of said people and community. Barack Obama is in fine company, and georges, as usual, keeps demonstrating his dumb.

Sharing's other misery destroys a nation too. Don't rejoice yourself so much, you will have to see who wins the mid terms election. Fact is that this supposed community is not working anymore because people perhaps see that Obama prefers minorities to others

I know about the constitution xfire, you don't need to remind me this. Problem is that with a fucked up healthcare law which counted 5000000 cancellations for 50000 subscriptions, it didn't benefit to the community. The jobs created by Obama were part time ones, so again does it benefit the whole community? Not really. You honestly consider Nancy Pelosi, Kerry and The Hillary Bitch as a fine company? You are fucking stupid and blind if it is the case

"5000000 cancellations for 50000 subscriptions" are numbers you just made up, much like most of what comes from republicans, lies and fabrications. If you didn't understand the analogy I was making between Barack Obama and the Founding Fathers being the good company that he's in, you really are dumb, but that's no surprise, you prove how dumb you are every time you post in this section.

instead of sharing somebody else's misery why not give them my hand up to happiness that's the issue there you're always negitive who thinks it has to be about me and if I don't have its not, its not good enough

georges you do realize that when you combine americas minorities they ARE the majority right? You seem to totally ignore the fact of the rich getting richer and corporations making more than ever. Why? Why do you not address THIS FACT? I know why, because it disproves your claim of him being a socialist. And what's wrong with paying attention to the minorities? They are the working people in this country. They pay taxes and they vote. Why should they be ignored? The republicans dont ignore them, they just create laws and sentence guidelines to keep them in jail or with felonies so that they cannot vote. It also keeps them poor and hopeless which is what the republican agenda requires. They want there to be 2 classes, the very rich and very poor. This will keep them in power and that's all that they want.

The jobless rate started falling in 2013? No way, we all know it began falling on January 20, 2017
