ESPN Headline Gaffe Gets Staffer Fired; Accused of Racism

Did anyone else see this over the weekend? The ESPN.com headline after the Knick's Jeremy Lin finally had a poor night read "Chink In The Armor." Whoops. Got one staff member fired, and another suspended for 30 days. I can see how this could be an honest-to-goodness mistake, but with all the play on words with Lin's name lately (Linsanity, Linning, etc...) to throw out something like that without thinking is idiotic.

Firing the guy that came up with the headline is warranted, completely, IMO. And even if he didn't intend it as racist, then he still should have been fired for being stupid. These are the dangers of internet news outlets these day. Everyone wants immediate information, and the editing process, as well as the overall quality of work that we see from internet-based news outlets has gone way, way down in my opinion.

As a side note, the guy who got suspended for 30 days actually dropped a "Wanted 2 apologize 2 all those I have upset. Not done with any racial reference. Despite intention, phrase was inappropriate in this context. My wife is Asian, would never intentionally say anything to disrespect her and that community."

Total "I-can-say-the-N-word-because-I-have-black-friends," moment. Thanks, guy.

Now is the time for Jeremy Lin to set an example of "Christian forgiveness" and request that ESPN reconsider the firing.

C'mon, it's clever. :1orglaugh

It's only racist if he points out that Lin scores well in Mathematics but is a real shitty driver.

It's not like he pointed out Mr. Lin's shitty driving; his inability to pronounce L or R properly; his encyclopedic knowledge of dry cleaning or that he knows the exact recipe for the number 42 special. People are too quick to judge.

That's rearry racist!

A little Freudian slip of the tongue there, eh.

I saw this a couple days ago and just decided to pass on it (someone had posted about it in the NBA thread).

The editor is just a fuckin' moron, nothing more.

That was just dumb, you gotta have common sense!
