Ebay - May Their Greed Destroy Them

Hi everybody.

A few years ago I used to buy and sell on Ebay, it was pretty good for the most part.

Now I've been doing it again and its almost not even worth the effort thanks to the changes they've made , which I chalk up to greed from a monopoly.

1- They now take 9% of what you sell.
It was around 3 or 4 % a few years ago.
Thats on top of the listing fees.

2- They now own Paypal and force you to use it.
They bought paypal a few years ago. In the past it was an option to use, but most people still preferred Money Orders or Checks to avoid the 2.9 percent fee paypal charges. Today you MUST use Paypal, no way around it.
So there's another 3 percent gone.
I even posted in an auction that money order is and option.....somehow Ebay detected the words Money and Order and killed the listing.

3- They now even take 9% of the shipping charge. So if you charge actual shipping charge you gotta jack up the price 10% just to avoid getting screwed on that.

Plus other stuff theyve changed.

It used to be a great way to buy and sell stuff. And at the volume of sales that site has you would think 3 or 4 percent was already a gold mine for them.
Now its just too high, 13+ percent. .......I guess thats typical of a monopoly or a government, start out good then get greedy and let the raping begin.
What a shame.

It's all one big pyramid scheme, we should stone them all to death!

What a shame.

Ever hear of the expression, 'making lemonade out of lemons' (or something like that)?

Why not start your own site doing all the chit you liked that ebay doesn't do anymore?

There are probably people like you out there and you don't have to be forced to do anything.

Word of warning, there are likely specific reasons they've adopted the business practices they engage in now. So beware.:o

oh man, has ebay changed.

not only with the charges for listing, the charges for more then 1 pic, the final cut on a sold item, and the paypal charge, the place just blows now.

once upon a time, i used to do rather well there as a seller. had an assistant and everything. but now. pfft.

its a fucking retail store now. unless you have something really weird and rare, its going for the average price, pretty much store price.

people still rape on shipping too. its a big scam and needs to be stopped. they charge lets say 7.99 for a light computer part then charge 24.95 for shipping. the end price is about right for the item as a whole but the catch is since you are only paying 7.99 for the item, the seller doesnt get charged a percentage on the shipping, its just based on just the 7.99.

they figured that shit out. ive reported it before and ebay has closed the items. youre not supposed to do that but people do. oh ebay. wtf happened to you? the market is so polluted too.

You can still find people on eBay that will take money orders.
They should stop trying to force people to use paypal only.
I will not use them.

Raising their fees when they basically have a monopoly is wrong. :nono:

{netflix too ! }

Yes. :flame:

eGay customer support is definitely the worst! I had to call 4 times to figure out what was going on with my account. Everytime I called they told me something different. Not to mention, being on hold for 10 minutes just so they can "take a look at my account". Then come back on the phone and say that they have to transfer me. Guess what happens next? They had to put me on hold so they can "take a look at my account"!

I strongly suggest anyone looking to sell online, to check out EBID.NET. (Depending on account) they do not charge anything. They little the do is nothing compared to eGay!
Here is their FAQ page...

Ever notice that many people who bitch the most about "monopolies" and large companies/corporations are also those who are most apt to politically back them?

You dont have to use paypal you can still accept other forms of payment. I just paid for an item with a credit card thru the store that was selling it. Imo ebay customer service sucks most of the time but their buyer protection is way better than amazon provides.

What a shame.

It's like the roman empire or similar constructions...

The tend to drive themselves further and further, loosing all contact with the core that made them great.

So a new, fitter oponent will raise, and finish off the greedy, corrupt machine.

Won't be long :2 cents:

You can't destroy Greed because it's part of Human nature. Everyone Greeds :)

For the EMPEROR!!
I haven't used ebay in years, but I was thinking about selling some stuff recently. I just hadn't got around to it.

From what you guys have said, I'll have to have a look to see if it'd really be worth it.

It's quite good and has everything under the sun. Ebay has truly gone global, expanding 40% in Asia last year alone. It's the World's biggest auction market.
