Does power really corrupt?

Power always corrupts.
This is why there should be a law that when anyone becomes rich or is appointed or elected to a position of power, they should get a few lashes in the public square, so they can be taught humility, and as a warning of what's to come if they behave like greedy assholes.
Being rich or powerful is a privilege not a right to act like you're better than others and do whatever you like.

Power, more so, lust for power, does (IMO) corrupt. Maybe there are those unusual people who are born into power and they're not quite as corrupted by it as those who didn't have it, but wanted it, and will do anything and everything to hold onto it.

But in the end, the ones who would pass any such laws are the very same people who typically want power. It's like wanting the foxes to pass laws against killing chickens. We were discussing Orwell's 1984 in another thread. Here we could discuss Animal Farm. So even if the chickens successfully banded together against the foxes, it wouldn't be long before they began to act the very same way and would abuse their new found power too. Every Communist revolution since 1917 has proven that to be true.

Human nature just hasn't changed all that much since the very beginning. And that's our shortcoming.

Well, everyone knows that with great power comes great responsibility. Some people can't handle the responsibility.
