Do we choose?

vodkazvictim

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
I've heard it said that people do not begin to use their rational decision making capabilities until AFTER they've made a decision.
Now look at our political compass. People seem to be (for the most part) rigidly stuck in a partisan war between left or right, each side determined not to budge an inch and determined to see no wrong with their chosen side.
But did they really choose?

Is it simply the case that (wether by nature or nurture) we have evolved so little from our primitively heirarchical ancestors that those on the right are their purely by inclination and the situation is the same for those on the left?

Lets say that we take the right to be conservative: Nothing to change, respect for the establishment, and the left to be reactionary: Revolution, new order.
Do we actually choose our side, or is it simply the case that the choice is made for us (for arguments sake, at the subliminal level) and we THINK we choose?
I know I just rephrased the question, but I'm aware that at this time on this date I may be less than fully coherant (shocking, I know...)
Well? What do you think?
