Do People From Southern California Have A Regional Accent?

There are all kinds of American accents. You got New Yorkers, Bostonians, Southerners, Texans, upper Midwestern folks, and others who have distinctive accents. Do we SoCal people have an accent?

Do we sound like this to you guys? I admit to giving directions in that way.

Some do. I dated a girl with a valley girl accent. It was hilarious.

California has enough rural parts that you're apt to have a little country mixed in, but the dominant California accent that I hear is a sentence-end lilting, a flattening of most vowels, and the unpardonable tendency (exclusive of race) to change -ing endings into "een". "I'm eateen sometheen". Great pre-employment screening, right there. Screeneen.

This is an interesting quiz to determine if you have an accent:

The dialects and accents that run through the South, and up the Eastern seaboard have interesting and varied origins and influences. If you're into that shit.
