Creating Ringtones

I don't know about anyone else...but I think these cell phone companies have a really good scam going. It used to be when you bought a new cell phone it came preloaded with dozens of decent ringtones. Now you buy a phone and you get 6 to 8 lousy tones. Sure...you can download tones, at $2.99 each!!! I have Verizon...not sure if this is a Verizon issue or all cell phones/companies.

I've heard of ways to create your own ringtones... Has anyone tried this and had success? Did some surfing but didn't really find anything all that helpful.
Any suggestions?

If your phone is able to play mp3s, you can use them as your ringtone. That's what I do.

Not if you have a Verizon phone. The MP3s are stored in a different file than ringtones, and you can only access the ringtones file when you're trying to set ringtones for your phone. That is one of about 500 reasons I'm about to get rid of Verizon service.

Its been a while since I made my own ringtones (I just make a bunch of them and cycle them through my phones) but usually you gotta make the file into the format the phone can read and place it a specific folder.

If you can, post the make and model of your phone.
