Compaq Laptop for $298

I saw this here is this a good deal ?

I would rather jump on this than rather stand in line on Black Friday dealing with the crowds so I'm hope this is good.

others here know way more then me.
But to me...RAM looks barely adaquate. Same with HD. And I assume the graphics are also just adaquate. Compaq (hp) is a solid brand (imo).
But for $300? Sounds great to me.

Other then hardcore gamers or graphics hogs; is ANYONE buying desktops these days?

Conspiracy...
It's probably going to cost a few hundred to upgrade. If that's fine by you then buy it.

I like desktops. I want another one like mine.

Anyone want to help me buy it?
Donations can be sent by money order or cash. :D

Great deal for a laptop, however I need one with a 3D graphic card so I can play World of Warcraft so I'll keep looking.

2 gigs ram? Enough to run vista.. and especially winXP or any linux distro.

160 gig HD is low-end these days, but most people dont even USE half of that. Digital-camera pictures, iTunes and a game or two isnt going to eat up 50 gigs anytime soon. :sigh:

Excessive HD size these days. Just plain unnecessary.

my computer is like a 2003? it has maybe 40 gigs, and I think I have around 25 left. If you have that much shit on your computer, the emphasis is most likely on the shit part. You need to get more discriminating tastes.

I only have stuff on my computer that I use. if I'm not going to use it, it gets delete. If I think I might want to use it again someday, then it gets put on a disc before it's deleted.

I didn't even realize that Compaq was still in business. Hmm, you learn something new everyday.

Umm, I don't know if I'm looking at this ad the wrong way, but beneath the laptop in question, it says "Minimum 10 per store". So, I'm not sure if the ad is for the public or for computer retailers. I would look into that first.

Other than that, the specs on the computer seem pretty solid, especially for around $300.

My understanding was that 2 gigs can run Vista, but barely. But I could be wrong.

I have a 750 gig HD plus around 500 gig's of external HD and I vaguely wonder if it will last me until the end of next year.

But you're right. 160 gig's should be enough for most people.

What the FUCK do you have on your computer that takes up nearly 1,250 GIGABYTES?!?!?!? :wtf: You can literally run a huge business with that amount of power. SHIT!!!

I have 4G of HD and around 40% of it is "free" at the moment. FYI - I've had the same PC since 10 or 11 years ago. And, yes...I have WIN98. HA!!!

Lol...I knew someone would ask that.

Programs, games, software, the female form, music, movies, graphics and other things....:)

No offense man, but you have only 4 gigs of HD? I'd go insane. I have twice as much RAM as that.
I do admire your frugality. And that guy on the 'posting pics' thread can't acuse you of owning too much porn, lol.

Some of the good quality digital pictures can eat up the disk space if you have enough of them on your computer. I'm sure some people out there have videos that eat up the space also.

I still like desktops better just because you always have the option of upgrading them if you need to. Someday in the future years from now I'm actually thinking of just building my own when this computer finally goes down. So much of the hardware is integrated with a laptop that your stuck with what you have. Still it might be worth it depending on what you use it for. Somebody with only a few simple computer needs might not need much at all.

To the OP, that is a great deal. 2 gigs is plenty for vista as long as you're not running any memory hungry apps. I'm going to assume that since you had to ask "is this computer ok?" then it is for you. I'm a pretty power hungry user and if I had 300 to spare I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'm on my second compaq laptop, both have had zero problems and are still in frequent use, I seriously doubt you'll regret it.

Does anyone buy desktops anymore?
Only people who want to do more with their computer than update facebook and sync their ipod. Anyone who wants scalability, flexibility and upgradeability will always take a desktop. Not to mention gaming nerds who want dedicated graphics for under a thousand dollars. You can build a desktop for about 600 bucks that'll destroy laptops that cost 10 times as much.

Looks like a good deal but it still depends on your needs.

Are you going to use it for games, photo/video editing or other stuff that eats up resources?

Just for basic stuff plus I'm going to buy 1 gig ram for it.

Thanks guys I'm going to pick this up

Senob and I stopped at the Evil Empire Store this evening. They WILL have at least 10 for sale tomorrow.

However, Wisconsin law (we were told) says that they have to sell them for $398. :dunno:

Don't waste your money. Get it first and then see how you go. Everybody thinks it's all about RAM but you can waste it. If your computer is under RAMmed then yes, it will run slow, but any RAM in excess of what you need does precisely zero for performance. On top of that, it probably has 2 RAM slots with a 1 gig stick in each which means no empty slots for your additional gig. Again, save your RAM money until you know you need it.

You were right, at first it was slower than my XP thinkpad until I deleted the bloatware and ran a program called tweakVI now this thing is quick without the ram upgrade.

I'm in California and the store I went to had 62 in stock, price was $321.10 with tax included.

Awesome! Nice job, I think it is a great deal. Since the price was $398 here in Wisconsin, I decided to pass the deal up. (Even though I think that price even still would have been good.) I'm hoping to find a similar deal to the $298 price between now and the holidays either online or at another store. Not sure exactly what the law here states about what the price has to be, so I don't know if this law will affect all similar deals at all stores around here. I'll be keeping my eyes open.
