Chris Evans to Host Top Gear

The BBC have announced that Chris Evans is to take over from Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear following Jezza's suspension and subsequent non renewal of contract with the BBC.

I have never really liked Chris Evans but I am interested to see how the show will change with a new cast. There was talk of Jodie Kidd taking on the top spot at one point and I think that she would make a great addition to the show.

Top Gear as we knew it is over. There was a very unique chemistry with those three idiots and Jeremy was the glue that held it together. I think viewership is going to drop dramatically, because I don't think they're going to be able to make the show entertaining enough that regular people who couldn't give a fuck about cars will want to watch.

I just hope it doesn't go back to a more 5th gear format.

Agreed. If I wanted to watch a program about what car to buy, I wouldn't be watching Top Gear in the first place. It is an entertainment show that features cars car most of us can only dream of owning.

The fact that they are trying to keep the show alive is ludicrous, in my opinion. I completely agree with Petra, there was a chemistry between the three of them that will not be able to be matched. (Kind of like when Michael Schumacher was replaced as the Stig because of his accident..and everyone realized that the Stig is only cool when he can drive better than everyone else)

The BBC will be in for a rude awakening if they really think that Top Gear is still going to be anywhere near as successful. Just look at The American version for an example of what happens when you try it with other hosts.

Also, other networks are crazy if they don't jump on the "Clarkson, Hammond and May" team and start a new Top Gear show with a different name.

... I didn't even know who Chris Evans was before this post. Didn't they interview him once on the show?

Chris Evans is fine with me. He is a petrol head after all. The show will change and we all know it won't be the same without the three amigos. I hope Jodie Kidd joins the team as well. Looking forward to seeing Clarkson, May & Hammond turn up on another broadcaster essentially doing the Top Gear thing. It will happen.

I'm still not sure who Chris Evans is or what I would know him from. But I can't see this being the same show without Clarkson. It's too bad he went from acting crazy to actually being crazy. That usually doesn't work out too well...

Hopefully Evans will make his mark on it, with how he did with TFI Friday, although that will depend on what the BBC lets him away with. If he can pull it off, I think Clarkson & Co will be soon forgotten apart from the replays they do with them in Dave.
