Censorship: What is your opinion?

I was reading the George Washington thread, and the topic of censoring images came up. I did a search, and found no threads in the Freeones Talk forum.

This topic is a very important one these days, especially on the internet. I know the there have been some Bills floating around US congress dealing with Net-Censorship and Net-Neutrality. Both involve censorship, just at different places and levels.
I want to open this thread up to debate on all forms of censorship, especially in entertainment and the media, both on and off the net. What is your opinion? Where should the control over what is censored come in, if at all?

...I'm going to hold back my opinion for now. Maybe as we discuss this you will figure out where I stand on this Important topic...

Re: Censorship: in the world and the internet

I think a site devoted to mainly porno wants to be pretty much against most types of censorship.

Re: Censorship: in the world and the internet

True. but I thought it would be a fun discussion.

I think it could be a good discussion and think freeones would have been the perfect place for it.But like AFA said to you in the other thread the free refers to we ain't charging you for it not that your free to do what ever you like lol.

Re: Censorship: in the world and the internet

That one is or not being charged for being a member is irrelevant. It is speech and the content of speech that is at issue. However, if payment were the new societal rule, would that mean that only people who pay for an ad in a newspaper would have the right to publish their idea? Monetary consideration is not on point as to free speech.

Indeed, the great irony is that porn should be the greatest advocate for free speech. But, here I was censored not for bad words, not for images of bestiality (which are protected speech) but for posting a photo right out of the history books on lynching when addressing George Washington:

http://board.freeones.com/showthread.php?t=140802&page=4

That image is:

http://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL2095/9096376/16764301/260896225.jpg

Rather than review their notions of "appropriateness" the moderators dug in their heels and made up a shifting set of reasons for deleting the picture. Those elaborate justifications were "it's disturbing." But then when they were challenged to show the criteria for what is "disturbing" they went to the fall back position of might makes right don't question my arbitrariness- it's a private party and we can screen out what we like.

That's a disappointing stance to take from folk, who are on the run all the time by forces who accuse them of being smut peddlers. What's even more telling is that the original thread was about the whole founding father mystique of constitutional rights- Mr. George Washington.

First of all, you need to admit that it was not entirely deleted. Sure you can't see the image on the thread, but you can click a link that looks exactly like the link in your post referred to in mine. Other wise, the moderators will win. They say (and it is fact) that your picture was not deleted.

Right now, you asking them to un-delete your hotlinked photo, when you should be asking them re-hotlink it.

Re: Censorship: in the world and the internet

Not only is it:
100% wrong and illegal. No one should say what I can and can't watch.
It's also complete bullshit!

Re: Censorship: in the world and the internet

I think some censorship is necessary. But, more the most part, the government should have no say in it. People have the right to information, what ever it is. But they also have the right to select their information intake. Providing censored material, can be helpful to some people. But, also providing the uncensored version is necessary and should be required...especially if people want it.

I could live with it that way too! :glugglug:

As far as internet is concenred, I think there shouldn't be any cnesorship.
Seriously, isn't it stupid for an entire country to ban a site because it is somewhat offensive?
If you want to protect your kids from watching porn, or better yet protecting yourself from knowing your kids are watching porn, then there are a million of porn blockers out there and you better install them but you know what, no one can stop teenagers from doing their shit since they're teenagers.

As far as general censorship, as in on the Television, I think it should be more strict. Last summer, in the Israel Lebanon war, Israel were broadcasting the specific spots that the bombs hit and they even showed maps and the other side was watching it so they could aim them better but the government was too stupid to censor the news from giving out exact locations.

censorship to everything is not the solution but you can't tolerate things that are borderline

Borderline to what?

I'm barely one to speak on the matter, but borderline being the line between wrong and right in social situations.

Like yes, it's okay to lean in towards the ear of your good friend and tell them a naughty joke in public.

Like no, it's not okay to tell a racial joke while in a toy store during busy hours. (Why'd the black guy cross the road?)

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
On one hand, censorship sucks. On the other hand, it is completely necessary. Staying on topic with this thread, in regards to censorship on the internet...

If the government didn't step in and enforce rules and regulations that apply to the internet, all hell would break loose. Imagine, if no laws or regulations were set in stone, people could put whatever they want on the internet and there would be no legal consequences involved. People would be able to start websites dedicated to things like CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, BESTIALITY or LIVE RAPE. Would we really want 100% uninterupted access to garbage like that? No. Would we want our KIDS to have 100% uninterupted access to garbage like that? HEEEEELL no.

I'm all for free speech but dude...there HAS to be a line that can't be crossed, it's as simple as that.

In my opinion, a lot of the emotions directed towards "anti-censorship" are simply derived by the concept of "you want what you can't have". Once you have it, you probably wouldn't even care about it anymore.

We should just be enjoying the freedoms that we already have and stop complaining.

0% Censorship, 100% Disclosure ...

I am for 0% Censorship, but 100% Disclosure. Far too often shows and other TV programs do a horrendous job of disclosure, and play games around the system. I am a Libertarian and I would love to be the director of the FCC.

For example ...

Remember the 2004 Superbowl incident? Remember all the people claiming innocence? That's fine, I don't care, here's what I would have done as the director of the FCC.

For the next 3 years, the NFL would to proceed any return from a commercial break with the disclaimer, "This show may contain adult situations and partial nudity. Parental Guidance is suggested."

0% Censorship, 100% Effect. You hit them in the pocketbook, with advertisers! That solves the problem instead of the finger-pointing and lack of accountability. It also sets a precedent for entertainers to think about their audience before something happens.

And to make sure that wardrobe is proper, and not an "accident waiting to happen." Unless, of course, they don't mind the disclosure aspect. If so, show hard-core for all I care.

Parents will just know beforehand, not afterwards.

I think censorship needs to be limited. But it is hard to know how to do this correctly. Some people feel they need the censored material. Some people do need the censored material. Others don't need it and don't want it. So providing to appropriate amount in the right places can be difficult.

So far, I think Xilo Z said it the best. I would just add that everyone should have access to both versions of the information. And, the only people that should decide what versions we view or learn should be ourselves, or the parents of kids they have legality of.
