Can someone please explain Ed Sheeran to me?

I first saw him on an award show a few years ago.It seemed whenever they cut to a commercial they would show him in the crowd.I kept thinking “Why do they keep showing this seat filler guy in the crowd?”.Then I realized that he was a musician and he became pretty much the most popular male artist along with Drake.
I just don’t the appeal of this guy.I think he is very creepy looking.Keep the **** away.
I can always see the appeal in music artists that I don’t like.
Rihanna,Spice Girls,Beyoncé- girl power,good dancers,beautiful women.
John Mayer,Justin Timberlake,Drake - good looking guys with average voices, good dressers, women love them.
I have read several CD and live shows reviews of Ed Sheeran and there is pretty much a consensus on this guy.He has a good but bland sounding voice,he’s a boring performer and he looks like Danny Bonaduce with glasses after he stuck his finger in a light socket.I also see that he has gone the Justin Bieber way of “Look at me!I just got a bunch of tattoos.I’m a rebel now and not the wholesome guy you think I am”.
Am I wrong in saying he is this generation’s John Denver.

Con’t
I give the guy points for becoming a great success but I wish he would go the fuck away.
Anyone else with me on this?
Can an Ed Sheeran fan on here explain his appeal to me?

Ed Sheeran is the classic case of a selfmade artist. He began busking, then into small clubs, writing his own material, which first was not as good, but he got better and better, sold his selfproduced CDs, and the nmomentum just grew and grew.

When A&R managers approached him, he was in no desperate need to sign - he already made a good living. He got a great deal, and kept touring and perfprm with a loop-board, building each song live on the spot, a feat well noticed by great artists around, which begun askiong him to feature in their songs, etc.

And he just is a nice guy, who chose the vice - like John Mayer - getting into tattoos, to stay away from other, more vicious things, which he kept clear off.

I really like him, and respect him as a musician and performer.

Thank you for confirming to me that people today do not know the difference between good music and **** music that nobody will remember 10 to 20 years from now.

I had this discussion elsewhere. Would you please share some examples of current artists that match your criteria and elaborate a bit what makes them stand out?

I'm as mystified as the OP. He was heavily influenced and more or less bases his style on Damien Rice (think the album is called 0). Rice never has anywhere near the success of Sheeran.

I think it's his dorkiness that appeals to many. His music is pretty inert although he is he is in high regard by his peers.

I don't get him but good luck to him:)

Is somewhere outhere.
I'm not a fan of him myself but at least he's done in his own way, and his stuff is probably better than a lot of the bullshit we hear on the mainstream charts today.

Major Crimes? Shiiiit.
I can't say I'm a fan but some of his songs are decent. If he appears on the radio or I hear it somewhere it doesn't bother me. There's a ton of crap that is a lot worse out there.

I already did that in my first post.
Did you not read it?
People will not be listening to Ed Sheeran’s music 20 or 30 years from now.I will bet anyone on here any amount of money on that.I give the guy my respect for becoming a big success but I don’t see anything in him or his music that justifies the amount of music sales or the attention he gets.
If an ***** landed on earth and asked a human who are the most popular musicians and a human handed the ***** a picture of Ed Sheeran and played his music for him,the ***** would scratch his head and ask “Are you fucking kidding me?”.
