Including this year he has 245 goals in 355 games, which is an average of 56.59 per every 82 games. He's only 24, so if you assume he plays until he is 40 and that he's played about 40% of the season schedule this year, he's on pace for a whopping 1127 goals. Now obviously he isn't going to put up 56 or 57 every year, especially later in his career, you have to figure he'll be in his prime for another 7 or 8 seasons. and if he nets his average, that's 700 goals by the time he's 32. If he only scored 30 from then on out, it would take him under 7 years to reach that accomplishment, and I'd have to figure he'd score more than 30 a year in his early 30s.

So. Could he do it? He is certainly on pace for it, but can he maintain that level of play? Will injuries play a factor in his career? Hmmm??? Gretzky has 894 goals btw.

You wouldn't understand.

You know, I had a feeling you would say that. It came from the under side of my balls (that's the place that tells me STDiva is near). Kinda like the feeling you get when you step on a rusty nail, but through your balls.

Anyway :2offtopic

If he's in his mid 30s and has over 700, that is when you start wondering. Until then, just enjoy watching a superb player in his prime.

A lot of guys we thought might have had that potential have come and gone. Lemieux, Bure, Jagr...

Gretzky's stats were front-loaded mind you. He scored well over 600 goals his first 8 years in the NHL. His last few years playing he was lucky to break 20 goals, but he remained one of the best playmakers in the league with all those assists.

If Ovechkin can stay healthy, then yes, he has a Chance. I won't say he will do it for sure, and in no way will he top 92 goals in a season, but out of all active players, he has the best Chance.

No, I think he'll fall short simply because of how he plays the game. Eventually, it will take it's toll on him, I guarantee you he won't be playing until 40.

OV is a douch!

I don't think it's possible the league was completly different then as it is now. Gretzky was way ahead of his time and played for numerous years. With OV's style of playing he won't make it till his 40's.

I sure hope he can and does. while I respect and admit gretzky was a gifted hockey player in terms of his offensive production, but in my eyes gretzky was a cherry picker his whole career, he never played defense, never went into the corners, and never got hit cuz of his enforcers. but all in all gretzky could score goals for sure.

Ovie like him or not, goes balls out, he is an all around hockey player who does everything. he scores, plays defense, goes into the corners, checks, he'll even drop the gloves if need be. Ovie is a monster. I love Ovie's game and his tenacity. I hope like hell he breaks princess gretzky's scoring record. :glugglug:

I'm not arguing with you at all, but in Gretzky's defense, no team or coach he ever played for was ever going to let him. The enforcers (or bodyguards) were put there for a reason. And if you were his coach, you'd do the same thing too.

That maybe true, but when push comes to shove which player would you rather have as far as a fans standpoint, a teammate's point of view?

a one dimensional player like gretzky was?

or a phenom like Ovie who is an all around player that plays exceptional in all facets of the game, if he indeed does go on to break gretzky's records, I for one, would certainly be elated.

Am I saying Ovie will? NO, can he do it? its yet to be seen. based on Ovie's physical play, we'll have to wait and see if injuries and durabiltiy turn out to be his undoing/downfall. :dunno:

To this day I still think and acknowledge Gordie Howe as the all-time goal scoring record holder. just like I still consider and believe Hank Aaron is still the Home Run King. :2 cents:
