We cut public broadcasting funding here in NJ and save $6 million a year. The state still holds the licenses but now the stations are funded by non profit organizations. They raise the money to provide and control the content. They get enough money to pay Big Bird. If they want to create a program about the World Series of Bird Watching (that was paid for since 1984 by NJ tax payers) then they can get the money on their own. Half a billion dollars every year from federal tax money pays for this stuff too. At the time that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created it was a good idea. Educational and cultural stuff that people with rabbit ears could get into their homes. We now have hundreds of stations that can run the same programming. The FCC is still there to encourage educational programming but it's time to cut CPB funding. It's purpose has run it's course.

Ah, Big Bird is a safe character to take shots at. But Oscar the Grouch... he's a different matter. A lot of people don't know it but Oscar ****** a guy back in '74 or '75. Some substitute garbage collector tried to pick up his can and didn't realize Oscar was inside. Oscar was known as a "blade man" back in the old country. He gave the poor dude a Sicilian Smile like nobody's business. I'm talkin' ear to ear with one fluid swipe of the wrist. Man, it was bad!

In all seriousness, sure, money could be saved by cutting CPB funding. The subsidy amounts to about $450 million a year. That's not an insignificant amount of money. But it wouldn't be enough to cover the cost of the war in Iraq for even one day. Can someone tell me again how that military action made me safer or better off as an American? No? Didn't think so. Or we could talk about **** subsidies which go to large corporate farms instead of ****** farmers too. That's about $15 billion a year. Hell, they've given out over $1.3 billion to farmers who haven't planted a single crop in years! But try winning Iowa by saying that you're going to scale back on that bullshit waste of money. :nono: PBS is pretty liberal and I'd say most people don't even know that they get a PBS channel. It's seen as a place that intellectuals and elitists go for their programming. And these days, for those on the far right, that's a perfectly safe group to go after. Go after that $450 million but leave that $1.3 billion alone? Yeah... makes perfect sense.

Rather than focusing on these dog whistle/red meat topics, which are really just used to get people stirred up, I'd like to hear both candidates promise to use a very basic, fundamental problem solving tool called the Pareto chart. If they could manage to do that (which I doubt), we could actually begin to look at real areas of waste, fraud, ***** and cost overruns. With that, we could identify the major contributors to our debt issues that should be addressed first. More bang for the buck, as they say. Will that ever happen? Heeeeeell no!
