I always though the movie that influenced your psyche was Planet of the Apes :D

I think your getting confused with Soylent Green. Different Chuckie Heston vehicle.

The Quiet Man

It stars John Wayne, "M. O'Hara," Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond and Victor McLaglen. The screenplay by Frank S. Nugent was based on a 1933 Saturday Evening Post short story by Maurice Walsh entitled The Green Rushes. The film is notable for Winton Hoch's lush photography of the Irish countryside and a long, climactic, semi-comic fist fight. It was an official selection of the 1952 Venice Film Festival. The film won the Academy Award for Best Director for John Ford, his fourth, and for Best Cinematography. In 2013 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

There has been mention of The Godfather (1972) and the Conversation (1975)

Here is the HBO documentary of John Cazale  ....

..... Watch this and count how many great actors and directors called him gifted. You'll be surprised. Yes, John Cazale made the other actors better around him.

As you can see, this is going to be different for just about everybody- for myself, I don't know if I can really name a "Best movie ever". It's too much a mood thing. If I had to pick a movie that was the biggest thing I've ever seen to hit the screen and become just... everywhere, everything, to everybody, it was the first Star Wars in 1977. Say what you will about Lucas, SW, or any of the rest of it- that was just... insane. Lines around the block for months on end, it was in release for over a year, re-released numerous times. People could not get enough of that, and it started to show up everywhere else, too, in references, parodies, and rip-offs, from TV to music- everywhere. I haven't seen anything like that since. No matter what "Yeah but..." you may throw- it wasn't like that. ET, Avatar, Titanic all made money, but do you remember a "Titanic Holiday Special"? I don't.
