Best and worst NBA lottery picks

Who's feeling lucky? The 14 NBA teams that failed to make the playoffs ended up in the draft lottery, with the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the top pick. But before Thursday's draft, it's instructive to note that a high pick doesn't guarantee anything. You can get a future All-Star at No. 14 or a total bust at No. 1. We have the best and worst picks at each of the top 14 spots in the lottery era, which began in 1985

I'm surprised Kwame Brown is the worst #1. He is a huge bust, but he's still in the league. I think Olowakandi is the worst #1, not only because of his poor play and complacency upon entering the NBA, but also because of the players drafted after him. Vince Carter, Antawn Jameson, Mike Bibby, Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce. That's the worst pick ever IMO.

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
I got you all trumped.. the worst lottery pick ever was when the pistons drafted darko milicic ahead of players such as Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade. Hmmm where would Detroit be with any 3 of those players??? :2 cents:

Fran Vazquez. Still waiting on him to come across the first pond. He and Dwight were supposed to form an unstoppable frontcourt. Instead he Ricky Rubio'd us years before Rubio did it, signing a contract with Barca AFTER getting drafted. Btw Vazquez just extended his deal with Barcelona. Wolves should feel fortunate.

It undoubtely is Darko Milecic.

Take into account a couple of factors:

1: The state of the Pistons franchise when they drafted him.

2: The players they past on to draft him, and the immediate impact they could've had on the Pistons.

3: The state of the Pistons franchise since then.

Let me help those that don't understand the gravity of that pick. The Pistons were LITERALLY A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!!! As a Bulls fan, I thought my torment wouldn't never end when they got the 2nd pick in the 2nd most talented draft in history! It has been proven time and time again, the NBA draft is the most significant draft in all of sports, because of the recovery time it takes a team when they fuck up in it.

Never was that more evident than Darko.

The Pistons, instead of being the dynasty that this draft handed them in a diamond encrusted case, rapidly started sinking. The Darko pick shot holes in that ship the size of Rosie O'Donnell. They could've gone with Melo or Wade of course, but it turned out that Chris Bosh was the deadly piece they past on. Ben and Rasheed Wallace eventually took off leaving Detroit butt-naked in the front court. Putting Bosh there keeps them more than afloat. Now Detroit is flat-out trash garbage.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Not sure about #1 but the worst #2 pick ever was Sam Bowie in 1984. The 3rd pick that year? A guy named Michael Jordan.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.

Yeah, but that was before the lottery. It started the next year. So technically, that pick is ineligible for this list.

But yeah.... worst. pick. ever.

I think looking at the list of players that followed him,I would tend to agree with the choice that Olowakandi is probably the worst lottery pick ever.

Technically, even though Portland did pass up on Jordan, and it was a big mistake in hindsight,I really can't fault them for doing it,because they already had a really good shooting guard in Clyde Drexler,so they were picking a player out of necessity is taking Sam Bowie.

I could also throw a name in the ring and pick Greg Oden.Bet the Blazers(again with another injury prone pick) wish they would've picked Kevin Durant.

Olowakandi started more games than Kwame, and at least he had a position. Does anyone know what Kwame Brown's true NBA position is??? Kwame Brown is the worst lottery #1 ever.

Gotta be honest, looking at both of those guys,if you are looking at the individual player stats, then Brown is worse, but not by much.If you look at the rest of that years draft in comparison to how bad that player was, then I would say that Olowokandhi gets the edge.

Ultimately,a legitimate argument can be made for both, and I don't think there's a wrong answer either way.

I would personally say that Olowokandhi out of the two,but really can't disagree if someone said Brown.I will say that if you give it a couple of years, then Oden becomes a serious contender to take the crown, considering the hype vs the end result. Also,I think that you could throw Michael Beasley's name into the conversation as well.

WTF?? Beasely isn't even close to being a bust. It's only his 4th season coming up, he averaged 19ppg, 5rpg, 2apg. He's improved statistically every year. The guy is good.

Hmm,didn't know that he was getting 19 per. The 5 and 2 aren't very impressive though for his size.

I guess I was just thinking that considering that he and Derrick Rose went 1&2,the Bulls came out way ahead on that draft than the Heat did,not considering the trade to make cap space for LeBron and Bosh.

Just to clarify,I wasn't saying that he was a bust just yet,but rather in the next few years if he doesn't continue to improve more than what he has, then he could possibly be considered a bust, considering he is a number 2 overall pick.Sorry, but career 15.9 PPG isn't really cutting it,although he is getting better,so I do see your point.

Olowokandi and Darko turned out better players than Kwame. But Kwame was in a weaker draft. Olowokandi fucked over the Wolves more than the Clippers arguably. His 1.5 career years of about 12 and 9 convinced the Wolves to shell out 16 million over 3 years (which 8 years ago was more significant than it sounds now). Of course immediately his health and skills quickly deteriorated.

Being a Detroit fan, I agree! People always fall for a big center, shame!
