Avatar size limit 80x80 pixels, why?

On most forums the size limit is 100x100 pixels but here it´s 80x80, why? Does it have anything to do with space and that those 20 pixels extra causes people to get wrist injuries from excsessive scrolling (if that´s the case i have a better solution: get rid of those silly remarks under the username)? It can´t have anything to do with file size since 19.5kb is more than enough for a 100x100 image.
I´m sure most people don´t give a crap about this but i like making avatars and i can´t use them here, and it´s almost impossible to make anything that looks good in 80x80 pixels.

Simply stated the sizes of avatar are restricted for 2 reasons...

1st: The smaller size allows for quicker page downloads for those who are still stuck at 56k

2nd: All avatars are hosted on this site, therefore it takes up space... so it stands the smaller the better.

Most members here distinguish themselves with their unique sigs and not so much avys :2 cents:

Yeah but the sig size limitation is a bit small IMO!

These arguments doesn´t answer the question why the resolution is restricted to 80x80 pixels, the file size limit is still 19.5kb which is more than any 100x100 jpg image is gonna be.

Apparently these rules doesn´t apply to everyone either, there is one poster that uses an avatar that´s 150x164 pixels. What does one have to do to be granted such special treatment?

This leads back to automatic adding of the signature. I'd use a sig pic and a cutesy quote too if I didnt have to click ONE EXTRA TIME every time I post somethin'.

Avatars.. yeah 80x80 is a bit weak. 100x100 is nicer simply because we're not running on shitty little 800x600 resolutions thru windows 95 these days.

As for sig pics.. ::shrug:: I've never used 'em cuz of above statements.

I wish the sizes were bigger too, I know it's hard but we can all make it work!
