Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins ...
I have to say Neil, even though it was before my time
He did something many others will never do
he landed on the moon, which was 40 years ago today

Neil Armstrong was not merely the coolest astronaut under pressure (Gemini 8 proved that, and he'd show it again in the seconds of the final decent), but also the most humble. That's ultimately why he was chosen for Apollo 11 and selected early to be the first one to step foot on the moon. To day he makes absolutely no money being a celebrity, and largely keeps to himself except when historical accuracy and select charitable events are at stake.
Although without Buzz Aldrin, we would have never worked in space, or taking several more years to do so. Every attempt to work in space prior to Aldrin in Gemini 12 was a monumental failure. All Ed White did in Gemini 4 was "get out and float," but to actually work around a spacecraft took some serious research, time, test, effort and engineering. Several, prior astronauts because completely frustrated and over-exerted themselves, utterly wasting all of their oxygen and time.
Lastly, Michael Collins designed the patch for Apollo 11. You'll note their names aren't on it. This was purposely done by Collins and the crew. The idea for the patch was to allow the entire world of humanity to feel like the landing was their own, and not American. Only the Eagle, the bird on the patch and the name of the Lunar Module, represented that it was an American effort and nothing else.
Most people don't know the stories of Neil, Buzz or Mike, or the countless, other astronauts, men and women and man-hours put into Gemini and Apollo before they landed, or even the man-hours after Apollo 11 to complete the series. Ironically, far many more people are more likely to believe it was faked than they are to actually stop and learn about all these efforts.
Sad, very sad indeed.
