Apocalypse Now, why did he ruin it?

I watched Apocalypse Now Redux yesterday out of curiosity and boy oh boy, it sucks hard. The original cut has just the right length and momentum to keep the viewer engaged. The Redux version slows it down to a crawl. Does the scene in the deserted camp with the Playboy bunnies or on the French plantation really add anything? I don't think so, it just adds a bunch of nothingness and it's way too long. Coppola should have realised he was at the height of his creativity when he made it and he should have left it alone.

Ive never understood why directors who do masterpiece movies (George Lucas esp.) feel the need to redo their greatness years later only to wreck it. George Lucas for example destroyed his Star Wars movies with the re-edits, and it was unnecessary. I have seen the original Apocalypse Now, great movie, i never saw any need to put out a redux version

Are you implying that playboy playmates don't improve the quality of any movie?

Blashphemy!

In one word; Money.

The only movie that I've ever seen where a redo actually made the movie better was Highlander. The redo explained a few things that was just missing from the original.

Coppola has never been happy with the film. It was a very troubled production which took about two years to shoot in the Philippines while a rebellion was going on. He changed the story several times, had multiple endings, couldn't decide if it would have credits (It was originally shown without credits.) Dennis Hopper may have been the most sober & straight cast/crew member ;)

Watch the documentary "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse" if you get the chance.

It was supposed to represent them going back in time. The further upriver they went, the further back into the past it became. Once they found Kurtz, they'd gone all the way back to our most primitive time.

It was quite brilliant, actually.

I prefer the original cut of AN. I'm still surprised how Coppola was able to finish the film and make a great masterpiece. The funniest part during filming was when Coppola needed helicoptors for one of his scenes and you see the choppers flying away lol. I know for sure I'd be shitting in my pants screaming out "wtf!?".

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"...

Wait... I may have to renege on my previous statement because I believe the Redux version is the only place you are able to view this scene in all of its glory:

It would be a shame to have to let this slip through the net. While I do dislike the bunny and plantation scenes, this scene alone makes up for having sat through them, in my opinion.

i own the original movie and i just pretend the redux doesn't exist. just like the star wars movies with the new scenes. but at least coppola was smart enough to delete those scenes for the theatrical run
