Anyone have a puppy or watched one?

I am fostering a two month old German Shepherd mix puppy. She was on the e-list for being afraid of people and I couldn't let them put her to sleep. She is teething, sick and cries at night. If any of you have an experience with puppies, I could use your advice. I have never had a puppy, the youngest was my dog Husker and she was 11 months old when I adopted her. HELP

Lots of exercise. Walk and run with the pup. It'll create a pack mentality/bond between the two of you. Be patient and use lots of positive reinforcement when she does something you like. Teething and sickness will pass.

Didn't you get briefed from the good people at your local pet shelter?
Does she cry more when you put her out of sight? If so, just lie down with her on a rug or in a carpeted room, I have found that both dogs and cats seem to loosen up a bit after they get a chance to visit up close and personal... let her slop her tongue across your face a few times, that'll certainly make her feel better about her environment! The first several days & nights will be challenging, hang in there...
... most of all, thanks for being this puppy's hero! :lovecoupl

PATIENCE!!! When I was 15 my dog had a litter. 12 pups, out of which 10 survived. She cared for the majority of them, but there was one that was lame and would probably not make it on her own, so the mom started chewing her. Just at that moment my dad walked into the room and snatched the pup out of her mother's mouth. We took the pup in and raised her. It was tough having to put up with the constant whimpering for no reason, shitting and puking everywhere, and the constant attention that the puppy required.

On a positive note, raising a puppy will give you some preparation for having kids, if you're into that sort of thing. Good luck. :)

Can we see a picture of the dog?

I've got a 5 month old Australian Shepherd....

Best thing I've found for teething are beef bones from our butcher. They bake them, and they have some dried meat on the bone. Keeps her busy for hours. I've found they are a lot cheaper at the meat shop as well, same size bones at pet shops were $15....$5 at butcher.

As already mentioned....lots of walks and basic commands.....

Think 'baby steps'.

It takes a LOT of repetition to train her to do something...and even more so to undo negative behaviour, such as being afraid of people.

For the next month (at least!) your life is not yours, it's the dog's.

As mentioned above, patience and form a strong bond (remember, YOU are the Alpha!).

Dogs are good stuff.

Enjoy.

You know the story about letting go, it can sometimes be painful!

Isn't that great? pain going into the ordeal and sometimes pain coming out.
Why not consider adopting her yourself... you know it's gonna happen. :D

I just got a dog last Friday. He's about a year and half old, a little wiener dog mixed with something else. He's absolutely adorable, but like others have said, my life does not belong to me anymore. He is such an attention whore. He has separation anxiety, so whenever we leave, he goes crazy. The first night we left him home alone, I came back to apartment to see piss and shit on the floor and the blinds completely torn to pieces. Now we have to crate him every night when we sleep and every time we leave the apartment.

He's insanely difficult. He barks at every single person that walks by, tries to chase them, constantly pulls on his leash when I'm walking him, tries to eat his own poop, won't poop during the day until I take him for a walk (on walks, he'll poop like 5 fucking times! It pisses me off), licks his own pee when he's peeing, won't eat his food unless he can see me nearby, waits outside the bathroom door when I'm in there, and won't eat his treats (I've tried 2 different kinds already).

Uuuuugghhhh I have so much work to do! He exhausts me. He's such a cute little dog, but man, he stresses me out.

Get him to sign up for Freeones. Sounds like he'd fit right in.

a Pet is just another responsibility I do not want.

yup i've got a 3.5 month old pitbull puppy right now that we had to bottle feed because the mother stopped taking care of her...i've raised a few dogs before but this is the first one that's grown up without a dog for her mother and as a result my girlfriend and i (her more so) are seen as mom to the puppy...it's taken her a while to figure out that she isn't a human lol

I am a failure to the Korean side of my family
Play and with her as much as you can that way the puppy will be tired out and sleep through the night. Also the good old ticking clock wrapped in a towel with somekind of warm water bottle reminds the puppy of it's mother. I remember my dad had this oversized stuffed animal he place the clock and water bottle in and our family dog would sleep very contently next to it.

My parents have a german shephard and the puppy time was the hardest ... im not sure how to deal with the dog but I do know it gets easier as they get older...just make sure you don't leave anything of value out or it may end up chewed up by the puppy!!! That's the only advice I have?

Kind of. Turns out the puppy has Bordetella aka kennel cough. She's been on meds for it for two days and the little girl is feeling so sick. Yes, she cries a lot when she can't see me. I have to put her in a crate in my office since she's sick and I don't want my two dogs to catch it. I take her outside a lot and I play with her too. Trying to get used to the crying late at night.

Thanks. I'll post some pics of her tomorrow. She hasn't been feeling well, so I haven't snapped any pics of her yet. I'll take some outside tomorrow.

I wish, but I already have two dogs. I have fostered several dogs, but Kelsi is the first puppy. She's only two months old. The rescue groups here needs fosters really bad and I couldn't foster if I didn't think I could let them go.

Your puppy is fucking adorable. It is hard girl. I haven't slept through the night in a week. I am so tired, I feel like a zombie. I don't know much about teething, and how to tell what she wants when she cries. What did you give your baby for teething? I gave Kelsi some toys, but she likes to bite my fingers instead. Those baby teeth are sharp. I just had to take her in. She was going to be PTS the next day and I couldn't have that. I wish I could save them all. :(
