The thing about the "Greatest Generation" is that it was a very progressive, very pro-science generation. progressivism and science are values that today's conservatives reject
I'm not sure that one can speak of
any generation in such a uniform way. I mean, how would you measure that? I think a lot of it is based on our perceptions, right? We highlight the things that we like or admire and we overlook the things that we don't. I think we all see what we want to see. I choose to look at my mom's generation (the Greatest Generation) and see hard working, determined, no nonsense people who just
got it done. I see it that way, while ignoring the older people I met in my youth who were anything but that. And there are times when I
choose to hammer millennials as being whiny, over-grown babies, who need participation ribbons and demand things because they
all think that they deserve a free ride (which they want other people to pay for). I tend to do that when I encounter one or more of these powdered butt types who melt into a screaming fit at the slightest indiscretion.
But in all fairness, they're not
all that way. And I should not lump them all into the same category. There are a lot of younger people who are
get it done types too - no different from the so-called Greatest Generation. How many? What's the split? :dunno:
From generation to generation, the world has
always been in a state of change. Is it getting better or worse? I don't know - depends on where you're standing as to whether or not the rain is falling on your head, I guess. Even though I've been tasked as a "change agent" for a good part of my working life, even I'm not totally keen on many of the changes that are going on in our society these days. I've never believed in change just for the sake of change. IMO, if you change something, there should be a net positive effect. But woulda/coulda/shoulda doesn't really matter, does it? My only
realistic hope for the future is that we at some point soon return to a time when people can at least discuss serious issues without totally demonizing people who have a differing opinion. But even that seems to be a pipe dream these days. So all I can do is take care of me and mine and wish others the best.
So what
do I know? Well, I know that it's 81 degrees in Belize today.
