Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday pardoned an Afghan woman serving a 12-year prison sentence for having sex out of wedlock after she was raped by a relative.

Karzai's office said in a statement that the woman and her attacker have agreed to marry. That would reverse an earlier decision by the 19-year-old woman, who had previously refused a judge's offer of freedom if she agreed to marry the rapist.

I heard about this. I understand these cultures are different and all, and I respect that. But there is NO excuse for the way they treat and look at their women. Maybe I'm just coming from a Western bias, but the way that women are treated in these Middle Eastern countries is downright pathetic.

Because that would also kill the same women and girls I'd like to see protected. :nono: Instead, we should bring back napalm, bring back flamethrowers (proven effective against cave-dwellers), bring back CS gas (and update it to oleoresin capsicum) and go in there with more than a token force and annihilate all male personel who carry their own rug with them. I feel that would be a more reasoned and proportional response.

My main problem is as a male family member I'll be damned if someone were to do this to my sister, daughter, niece, etc. and they would be walking no worse for wear. Society would find World Peace and the cure for the common cold before they would find their body. But I guess I'm more in touch with my Y chromosome.

Bear in mind many Afghans marry their cousins so whilst the rest of us would be disgusted at the thought of have sex with members of our own 'family' many Afghans wouldn't, I don't know if this is the case here but she could well have been related to her attacker so all in all it's a pretty fucked up situation.
