Isn't Absinthe supposed to make you hallucinate?

It's actually gotten a bad rap over the years, and very unfairly. There is a chemical in it that in huge, and I mean MASSIVE doses, would make one hallucinate. It's called tujone. However, the amount of tujone in absinthe is equivalent to you and three friends floating on a raft in the Pacific Ocean, you, the raft, and your friends representing the tujone, you see.

Really, why there are so many horror stories associated with absinthe is probably because it is very high in alcohol content. Anything with a high alcohol content will make one go nuts, if the conditions are right.

That being said, there is something different about an absinthe high.......

Thanks for the clarification. My friend has a bottle of it and we were both kind of scared to even try it. We've shot everclear, moonshine...you name it. But the horror stories of Absinthe were enough to curb our curiosity.

Nothing to be frightened of. It is a different flavor....people either like it, or they don't, kind of like strong, strong, licorice, sort of. But I say crack that bottle, my friend, you live but once!

I have only positive experiences with Absinthe. Very strong and spicy taste makes drinking of absinthe pretty slow. So, if you want to get drunk, you better start with something else than absinthe.

They will say anything to make something illegal.
Even though alcohol is a number one killer, it's still legal.
But, not Absinthe or Marijuana?

I'm not saying they are the best things to put into your body. But, you have the right to do it if you want.
As long as you're not hurting others.
The government needs to stay out of it.

agreed.
i know people who in adulthood still believe the numerous myths surrounding marijuana. like the "5% risk of instant death" or how it makes you hallucinate and go on an LSD-trip. i was very disappointed when i first tried cannabis seeing as all these expectations on a really adventurous high didn't come true. eventually though, i got over it and loved it for what it was :)

about absinthe, just try it out. but remember it's just a really tasteful spirit, don't expect too much.

Yuck!
Tried it. Didn't like it. Probably won't try it again. Maybe it's one of those "acquired tastes" but either way, I chucked a few breathmints into my mouth afterward!

If you're going to buy some... never ever get domestic stuff. Get the actual absinthe from overseas. You'll easily spend 100$ a bottle for the best stuff. Once you have it, the taste is.. acquired. There are ways to dull the sharp licorice/herb taste and that involves a spoon and some patience. Look it up online, they have exacting instructions on the matter.

and yes.. there is something a little more intense about absinthe drunkenness besides the reputation surrounding it. Try it when you have the time and money.

You can get the actual stuff in the U.S. now. They legalized it recently.
Oh, and never drink absinthe with "the men in Prague."
