Cops: Angry 4-year-old blasts babysitter with shotgun

Police say a 4-year-old boy shot his babysitter Sunday because the 17-year-old stepped on his foot.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the boy "retrieved a shell from a drawer in a back bedroom, grabbed a 20-gauge single-shot shotgun from a closet and loaded the weapon ... returned to the living room, and in front of another 17-year-old boy and other children, shot [Nathan] Beavers."

cont'd

Should the parent(s) be charged with any crime ?

Damn permissive justice system letting that 4 yr old off with no charges.

But lets see ,you leave a shotgun in just the closet, not a gun safe and ammo for it in an unlocked drawer where your 4 yr old can get both and use them to shoot someone.I will go out on a limb and say the parent should be charged as if he had done the shooting himself.Eithier that or all babysitters should be given right to carry permits so we can have living room shoot outs.

If there were no guns you wouldn't have this problem.

He could have used a nailgun or a crossbow instead.

I'm fucking amazed that a 4 year old has the capacity to, not only think like that, but knew where the gun and ammo was, and was capable of loading, and possibly cycling the round into the chamber. The parents are very much responsible for this, if they left a weapon unlocked in the house with ANY minor, they are negligent, but more over, if this kid knew how to handle a weapon, but was never taught the extreme consequences of not respecting that responsibility, they are criminal in that negligence. I think one of the most important things that needs to be asked here is, how and what was this child exposed to, that would make him choose this extreme violence as a way to settle a far from life threatening situation, and where there any signs that this child was starting to exhibit any type of anti-social behavior towards other small children, or animals, and also was this child from a violent home? Did he regularly see his parents fighting, and using violent behavior towards each other, or neighbors and other strangers, or non-family members. There is no excuse for what he did, but he did it, not the gun, and he very well may have used another weapon if a gun wasn't available. I hope there are some explanations given for all of this when its finally over and done with.

what kind of a 4 yr old could even hold a shotgun, let alone load it and cycle the shell????

I thought they only taught that stuff in Iraq???

I suppose because the babysitter wasnt carrying a gun it serves him right, I mean guns dont kill people do they? People kill people

Thats what I was thinking. He's only 4 and already knows how to load aim and fire a shot gun? Yea he'll wind up in prison for murder, its only a matter of time.

I'm with you my friend how does a 4 year load a shotgun.:dunno:

I was being sarcastic there :).I do not beleive he should be charged,he is 4 years old and not developed enough to understand and be held responsible.I was taking a swipe at the many posts I have seen in the past arguing children are not different in such things.Thats why we have juvenile courts and laws, the law and most people intimate with such things understand that children are not adults for the most part, but their is always political pressure from some groups of people to "get tough" with anyone and everyone so we have some children charged as adults. Some would execute or imprison just about anyone regardless of age or mental state. But you may be right about he is already on a road to further trouble in his life if he does not get some attention.Hard to know that from the info in this story.

Children learn by imitation. As the link from the story says.

"He knew it was wrong. He'd seen guns loaded and shot before, but he's never seen the carnage it makes when it hits. He knows it now," his father tells WBNS-TV."

Lets hope he knows it now,but I think maybe a 4 year old shouldn't be exposed to such things as guns being loaded, especially given how reckless this parent was with leaving the guns and ammo around.

what the fuck you lookin at?
Still no punishment at all is just bullshit!

what the fuck you lookin at?
He is 4 years old what you want to do send him to jail?

Fuck I dunno, but do something. Just saying "bad boy" won't cover it. Fuck it then, let him get off without any kind of punishment. Let me know what you think when you see his fuckin name in the news again in a few years

Anyone else thought about the last Halloween movie when reading that story?

You are right and some traditional beating would be a good punishment but you know what happens if you do that.

hmm?
ok how do they know he loaded it himself?
either somebody must have witnessed him loading it and did nothing to stop him or someone must have claimed that it wasn't loaded before the kid had it.

It says the father said the kid witnessed guns being loaded and shot before.

why would you take a kid under 4 or 4 shooting?

this story smells of fish.

if it is true than the owner of the gun or house should be punished for 2 things.
leaving a dangerous weapon in a childs reach (endangerment) and making things more difficult for responsible gun owners.
