.4 American hostages killed by pirates, US says

NAIROBI, Kenya – Four Americans taken hostage by Somali pirates off East Africa were shot and killed by their captors Monday, the U.S. military said, marking the first time U.S. citizens have been killed in a wave of pirate attacks plaguing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean for years.

U.S. naval forces, who were trailing the Americans' captured yacht with four warships, quickly boarded the vessel after hearing the gunfire and tried to provide lifesaving care to the Americans, but they died of their wounds, the U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

Two pirates died during the confrontation and 13 were captured and detained, the U.S. Central Command said in a statement from Tampa, Fla. The remains of two other pirates who were already dead for some time were also found. The U.S. military didn't state how those two might have died.

Negotiations had been under way to try to win the release of the two couples on the pirated vessel Quest when the gunfire was heard, the U.S. military said.

The Quest was the home of Jean and Scott Adam, a couple from California who had been sailing around the world since December 2004 with a yacht full of Bibles. The two other Americans on board were Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle, of Seattle, Washington.

"We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest," said Gen. James N. Mattis, U.S. Central Command Commander.

In total the U.S. said that 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking of the Quest.

Only minutes before the military said the four Americans had died, a Somali pirate told The Associated Press by phone that if the yacht was attacked, "the hostages will be the first to go."

"Some pirates have even suggested rigging the yacht with land mines and explosives so as the whole yacht explodes with the first gunshot," said the pirate, who gave his name as Abdullahi Mohamed, who claimed to be a friend of the pirates holding the four Americans.

Graeme Gibbon-Brooks, the head of Dryad Maritime Intelligence, said he was confounded by the turn of events.

"We have heard threats against the lives of Americans before but it strikes me as being very, very unusual why they would kill hostages outright," he said, adding that the pirates must realize that killing Americans would invite a military response.

The military said U.S. forces have been monitoring the Quest for about three days, since shortly after the pirate attack on Friday. Four Navy warships were involved, including an aircraft carrier.

Last week a Somali pirate was sentenced to 33 years in prison by a New York court for the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, a U.S. cargo vessel. That hijacking ended when Navy sharpshooters killed two pirates holding the ship's captain.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
This could be solved if shipping companies would simply invest in a couple of guys and a couple of .50 cals, but no, let nothing, not even common sense that would safeguard the profit, stand in the way of profit!

blame for this lies with the hostages

death is the ultimate price to pay for stupidity

why would you knowingly sail yur ass in pirate infested waters?

they knew the risks when they plotted their course

if people wanna throw their lives away i am not gonna stop em

no sympathy here

I wouldn't expect any sympathy from a goddam communist bastard.

If they were your freinds, you'd feel sympathy.

my friends have what i call common sense

its one thing to sail in that water way becuz its vital for trade with the east

we talkin billions of dollars lost if you halt trade

somethin entirely different to go their for recreation

they knew the risks

If I were in charge, I'd tell the navy that we're facing the bravest pirates in the history of the world. They are so brave that they just will not surrender! So I guess you guys are going to have no choice but to kill them all (it's a huge ocean, make sure their dead bodies sink)

Too bad, that area seems to have some really kickass beaches. If Somalia were a peaceful country it might have a strong tourist industry, apart from whatever other resources they have that they can sell to us. If Somalia had peace and security all it would need was a little bit of investment, but of course, who would want to invest there at this time?

Banned?
I can't wait for first kick-ass modern day pirate movie. I'm surprised no one has done it yet.

That is a sick, disgusting attitude.
Whenever you disagree with me I think of your posts like this and remember what kind of person I am dealing with.

No blame for the people that killed them for no reason.
Pirate infested waters? Its a big ocean.
These were just people probably working killed by people who steal using violence and murder.
I'm even gonna say that probably you know the killers were black and the victims probably white and that is a big part of your thought process about this. Thats the basis of your opinion.

Blame lies with the victims, twisted mentality.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
How'd they kill four tenths of an American? :dunno:

While they are innocent victims their wisdom and judgement certainly comes glaringly into question.

Why would you go tooling around in terrorist infested Iraq or sailing through pirate infested waters or sightseeing in a crime infested neighborhood for that matter??

It's impractical to think individuals can unnecessarily subject themselves to known hazards and expect to share none of the blame for what happens to them.

What is more troubling is the notion the vessel could have been rigged to blow upon being boarded by military personnel and the fact that 4 Naval warships were engage as a result of what amounts to be a tragic joy ride. What if..some of our best military personnel were killed or maimed as a result of this?

:why:

i would have thought that i would be plastered for my opinion by someone else(you know who) because they were apart of a muslim terror cell

guess even i can be surprised sometimes

so you tellin me that if some idiot stayed out all night gettin plastered, gets behind a wheel, then kills himself in a wreck you'd feel sympathetic

i view this in the same light

they werent workers btw.

they had been sailin around the world on their own free will

once more they were private citizens who could have had protection onboard

they werent a merchant ship

you made a concious decision to put yourself in danger

that area is known all around the world as a pirate hot zone

i guess these folks didnt get the memo

i have no clue how you bought race up and arrived at that conclusion

i'd love to see what evidence you have to back that up:mad:

i feel nothing for these people. of all the places they could go yachting, Alaska, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, even the waters off WEST Africa and they choose the dangerous waters of East Africa.

it's not like it's a secret what's happening over there. they're dead and it's their own faults.

They might have been stupid and did something that was incredibly foolhardy, but I think somebody else having a "blame the victim" mentality instead of blaming the perpetrators of the crime is even worse.

As foolish as they were they didn't deserve to have that happen to them.

It reminds me of people that try to blame a women for being raped after she dressed in a sexy way instead of the actual rapist.
