Torn & Frayed.
I grew up in Silver Spring;I was 11 years old, and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. We had just come in from playing in the snow for the hot-chocolate recharge, and saw the news footage of the helicopter lifting the woman from the frigid waters of the Potomac.

Scary ****.

Scary ****.

I grew up in D.C. The footage I remember most was the man (Lenny Skutnik) who survived the crash passing the harness from the helicopter to others. He finally lost strength to hang on the piece of ice supporting him and drowned.

I remember that like it was yesterday. Terrible scene.

Remember the guy who dove into the water and helped that woman who lost her grip on the life ring from the helicopter? She couldn't even see because of the jet fuel in the water. It was so sad. But, it was awesome when that guy risked his life to save her.

This also shows you how ill prepared the DC Area was for an emergency. The only helicopters DC had were the Bell helicopters like on M.A.S.H. Those helicopters were not equipped to fly in weather like that day. That particular helicopter was from the U.S. Park Police. Because of this there were changes in equipment and training.
