2010 FIFA WORLD CUP South Africa

Group A - Match 1

South Africa 1 : 1 Mexico
Uruguay 0 : 0 France

Well the first day is over and I must admit it was fairly uneventful (I fell asleep during the South Africa game and missed both of the goals after taking the afternoon off work!) but on the plus side all the teams seemed evenly matched playing some good football but not much happening in the penalty areas.

It seems to become a great event, and the teams are doing good, too.

Interesting is that both Koreas are ib the tournament, reminds me of eastern and western germany back in the days.

That would be an interesting game if that happened...

Sadly , the french team does not really play together in the offensive area, which I find strange, if you look at the sheer talent the guys have.

They seemed very negative and should have taken off a midfielder and not striker Anelka when bringing on Henry. They just didn't seem passionate and Henrys' free kick was so tame like he never thought he could even score. And the cheek of Henry to ask for a penalty for HANDBALL

Is somewhere outhere.
Those peformances might get France to the 2nd round, but that as
far as they will get.

It will be interesting to see how Argentina and England will get on
tommorrow :)

My heart says England 2 - USA 2

My head says England 2 - USA 1

The U.S. is probably going to be on the counter-attack and our counter attack put goals past Spain and Brazil....so don't take the Yanks for granted :thefinger

The pressure is DEFINITELY on England :thefinger

I think it will be exciting and full of scoring chances...maybe Dempsey will rise up and be the hero of the U.S. :dunno:

It's good to be the king...
I've been thinking - what happens after the World Cup bandwagon is over and moves on for another 4 years?

The South Africans seem to have put a lot of faith in this tournament - I hope that faith is not misplaced and their venues avoid the fate of Athens, post-2004 Olympics...

The 2004 Olympic legacy that London must avoid

I think East London needed some sort of regeneration anyway so these stadiums/facilities will always be in demand. There is already a severe lack of swimming pools in the area so that will be popular, I'm more concerned about it being finished ontime or at all but whenever I see the site it looks like they're making good progress so fingers crossed. I think South Africa will always be a popular tourist destination (more so is crime is tackled) and they first impressed at the Cricket 20/20 world cup so I don't see them falling the same way Athens did (also the Greeks have no money to spend at these venues or upkeep them).

Group B - Match 1

South Korea 2 : 0 Greece
Argentina 1 : 0 Nigeria

Again two fairly poor games. South Korea dominated over Greece and could have easily have scored more than the two they did. Argentina and Nigeria both played pretty well with the Argentines carving out a number of clear cut chances but poor finishing left them with just one goal, Nigeria tried their best but little happened upfront and both teams gave the ball away too much which may have something to do with the altitude at which the game was played. Only a few hours left before England kick off against the States. :yummie:

That's what I thought/think. Ulysses, you should have not done that. :nono:

I explained in the OP why, one of those threads started in december and already had 200 posts mainly concerning the qualifying (the tournament has only just begun so a new thread would be fresher) and the other thread is simply a poll on who will win and not necessarily a discussion on the matches as they play out.

It begins to get confusing when there are 25 threads on the World Cup. Ulysses, I would figure you've been here long enough you should have some idea of the code of etiquette around here. :2 cents:
