You have to go to class and do your homework. I have to, so why shouldn't he??

...Then again...

You also probably don't risk concussions and career or even potentially life altering injuries each week. You probably don't bring in millions of dollars to the university in ticket sales, television rights, and jersey sales while you're being filmed on camera and while you make almost nothing from it either while it cost the university almost nothing, and which they can get away with because they have set up a system where you have no choice but to go through them if you want a decent shot to play at a higher level even if you never cared about the education.

I think the academic stuff, while embarrassing IF TRUE for Newton, isn't really relevant today. Many football players go on academic proby. Shit, SC has had...10 that I can think of off the top of my head over the Pete Carroll era. :dunno: As far as I'm concerned, Newton didn't do anything wrong by transferring and he has kept himself eligible so far at Aubbie :dunno:

I think it's the pay-to-play shit for 200K that will be his downfall. Looks like Papa Newton was caught on someone's phone crowing about getting 200gs for Cam to go to Aubbie  It looks like this is Reggie Bush II people...

You are not kidding Reggie Bush II is the best way to put it.It is a shame if it is all true, but i have learned one thing this season that is not to put any thing pass a program.Hey Syracuse is 6-3 do yo think they have paid some players :dunno:I'm just saying.

Totally changing the subject here for a brief moment but did anyone else happen to catch last night's episode of 30 for 30 on ESPN? If you didn't, you missed something really special whether your are simply a college football fan or just interested in the human condition. Entitled "The Best That Never Was", director Jonathan Hock brilliantly chronicles the amazing story of the rise and fall of Marcus Dupree. For those who don't know, Marcus Dupree was likely the greatest physical talent to ever lace up the cleats on the gridiron. I had the privilege of seeing him play back in the 1980s. A very rare blend of size, power, speed and elusiveness, it isn't at all a stretch to speculate that, had things worked out for him, he would have been the greatest running back in the history of football at any level. I don't want to give too much of the story away but if you guys are anything like me, you will not want to miss this. I was totally riveted. Luckily, it is being rebroadcast tomorrow (Thursday), November 11 at 11:30pm EST on ESPN2. I'm going to TiVo it. It's a keeper.

More on it here:

Check it out. You can thank me later:thumbsup:....or not.:dunno:

He gets a free scholarship for God's sake. So just cuz he plays football, he gets to go to school for free, get free money from shady dudes (and if you think people don't recognize him and let him have free food, free shit, etc you're crazy), and gets to blow off school, while everyone else has to pay their own way and bust their ass? Hopefully he is a success on the gridiron or else else who won't do jack shit with his life.

Good stuff, Jag. Sounds interesting, I'll set up the DVR right now. Is it better than the one on the 'U'??

[Btw totally unrelated and I'm sure no one gives a shit, but this is my 1000th post]

Yumi...these kids drive revenue into the institution and over the course of 4 years if they are a highly successful player like Tebow (for example) they help earn for the school many many many many many times over the dollar value of their scholarship.

That helps the people who whine about why are these guys getting 'free' educations, etc. with keeping their tuitions low, book costs lower, room and board, etc. The education isn't 'free', they are helping earn these institutions tens of millions per year.

How is it 'free' when a football program earns $40 or 50 million per year in profits for their university? For that you bet they will cover the 20 or 30 G's per tuition for a player.

You think they should also be paying to do this for a university?

Postal Paranoiac
I'm loving these polls. There's such a dog fight this season it's got the voters in a pantywad, I can foresee an Oregon/TCU or an Oregon/Boise State national championship match-up. In either case the Ducks would probably win by 20 points or more, and the "experts" would spend the entire post-season second guessing themselves.

Re: Newton scandal (aka latest).

What if these schools don't pay when they are solicited and just report it when it happens???

That way the investigation into the player's activities and those who act on their behalf would happen before 10th game in a season.

Report the shit when it happens, flag the player and then they will (or should) stop asking because no one would be paying. At minimum they would fear being flagged.

OK back to this week's slate. We've got some interesting matchups this Saturday, boys and girls, so let's test your powers of prognostication as the college football regular season slowly begins to wind down (man, it goes so fast!). No prize this week....just bragging rights and props and kudos from fellow board-hounds. Here we go:

My picks:

Mississippi at Tennessee (This is a total pick 'em game. I'll go with Vols at home)
Indiana at Wisconsin (Badgers smelling Rose Bowl and triumph at Camp Randall)
Iowa at Northwestern (Hawkeyes are too much for 'Cats in Evanston)
Michigan at Purdue (Boilermakers can't match scores with Wolverines)
Minnesota at Illinois (Pathetic Gophers lose again, Illini are bowl-bound)
Vanderbilt at Kentucky ('Cats win at home)
Miami (FL) at Georgia Tech (Must win for 'Canes who also need a Hokie defeat. Time running out but true frosh Stephen Morris looks like real deal.)
Kansas St. at Missouri (K-State's D can't stop the Tigers in Columbia)
Iowa St. at Colorado (Emotional win for Buffs as a new era beings without Hawkins)
Utah at Notre Dame (Domers are doomed as Utes pounce in South Bend)
Georgia at Auburn (This game will be close but Tigers pull it off for another win and setup for showdown with Alabama)
Penn St. at Ohio St. (Just can't see Lions winning at Horseshoe. Bucks)
Virginia Tech at North Carolina (Heels upend Hokies for 1st conference loss)
Texas Tech at Oklahoma (OU wins at home after laying egg last week at College Station)
San Diego St. at TCU (SDU is better than you think but they can't run with Frogs at home. Another cakewalk for TCU)
Washington St. at Oregon St. (Beavers over Wazzu at home)
Texas A&M at Baylor (This will be tough but A & M has no answer for Griffin)
Kansas at Nebraska (Jayhawks come back to earth and get killed in Lincoln
South Carolina at Florida (Resurgent Gators smell SEC East title and take it at the Swamp)
Mississippi St. at Alabama (This game has trap written all over it for 'Bama but they wake up in time to win. Close game here)
Oregon at California (Aflac!!)
Stanford at Arizona St. (Cardinal rolls on against Devils)
USC at Arizona (Trojans stumble in Tucson in a close one)
Oklahoma St. at Texas ('Horns are a four-alarm grease-fire. Cowboys keep the misery going in Austin)
Clemson at Florida St. ('Noles bounce back at home in tough game against resilient Tigers)

Well, if all this is academic conduct stuff is true, then good riddance, I'm glad he's not at Florida. It is a fucking university after all. You have to go to class and do your homework. I have to, so why shouldn't he??

That's probably why he ended up at Auburn... apparently, their sociology "department" gives players good grades whether they go to class/do their work or not. NYT did a piece on it a couple years ago, of course the university found nothing wrong. ;)

looks like oregon vs auburn/BSU

please dont tell me the cream puff bowl again (tcu and boise) the wait and the crying is over..its put up or shut up time for them..playing each other tells me NOTHING!! AGAIN!!...bama is the only thing standing in auburns way as far as i see...boise oregon boise or tcu has NO chanch...and i said at the first of the year south carolina was not to be took light..they are one game away from a sec east title...may not happen..but florida better eat the wheaties..if south carolina wins the east...it may get scrambled a bit.......

Mississippi at Tennessee (Battle of the worst team in each division)
Indiana at Wisconsin (Wisconsin = best 1 loss team)
Iowa at Northwestern
Michigan at Purdue (Must win for PU)
Minnesota at Illinois
Vanderbilt at Kentucky (If UK wants to go bowling, they might have to win this cuz they beat Tennessee about as often as they beat Florida)
Miami (FL) at Georgia Tech
Kansas St. at Missouri
Iowa St. at Colorado (ISU still hurting from close Nebraska loss.....as terrible as CU is, Boulder isn't the easiest place to play, ask Hawaii and Georgia
Utah at Notre Dame (Utah's performance in this particular game is important for TCU)
Georgia at Auburn (I thought UGa was gonna win even before all the controversy)
Penn St. at Ohio St. (Ugly)
Virginia Tech at North Carolina
Texas Tech at Oklahoma
San Diego St. at TCU (SDSU a good team, but no way they win in Fort Worth against the best team in the nation)
Washington St. at Oregon St.
Texas A&M at Baylor (Just think if A&M handn'tve blown that game in Stillwater earlier this season....)
Kansas at Nebraska
South Carolina at Florida (Carolina has looked real iffy since beating Bama)
Mississippi St. at Alabama (If only they were playing in Starkville)
Oregon at California (As terrible as Cal is on the road, they are that good at home)
Stanford at Arizona St. (I don't trust Steven Threet not to turn it over.....if he doesn't the Devils could torch Stanford's defense)
USC at Arizona (This one'll be fun)
Oklahoma St. at Texas (If Okie State can't beat Texas now, then forget about it)
Clemson at Florida St. (Who the fuck knows, this is the ACC)

Huge game tomorrow night, Nevada at Fresno State, on national tv baby (ESPN). The winner still controls their own destiny in WAC, with Boise still left on each of their respective schedules. Going with the Valley boys at home against a ranked opponent.

Mississippi at Tennessee (The Vols are garbage this year..home or away)
Indiana at Wisconsin (The Cheese Army rolls on in a laugher)
Iowa at Northwestern (Iowa sneaks out with a W)

Miami (FL) at Georgia Tech (I'm done with the U :crying::wave2:)

Iowa St. at Colorado (CU did right by dumping the Hawk...)
Utah at Notre Dame (This could get ugly for ND fast...:thefinger)

Virginia Tech at North Carolina (Look who keeps winning...)

San Diego St. at TCU (Not a close win here)
Washington St. at Oregon St. (Or here)

Stanford at Arizona St. (Cardinal soar)
