100 not out! Record-breaking Brazilian goalkeeper scores again

Brazilian Rogerio Ceni converted a free kick on Sunday to become the first ever goalkeeper in world football to score 100 goals, helping Sao Paulo defeat rivals Corinthians 2-1 in the process.

'It was beautiful,' said Ceni, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 as their third-choice keeper.

Remarkable: Rogerio Ceni is mobbed by team-mates after scoring the winner in the Sao Paulo derby

Ceni struck a perfect right-footed shot over the wall, curling the ball into the top right corner past goalkeeper Julio Cesar in the 54th minute at the Arena Barueri.

'As a goalkeeper you don't enter the match thinking about scoring a goal, but it happened just as I wanted: with a free kick, deciding an important match. For me, it doesn't matter that it was against Corinthians, but for the fans it must have been important.'

It was Ceni's 56th free kick goal, while the others have came from penalties - in one memorable season for Sao Paulo in 2005 Ceni scored an incredible 21 goals in all competitions.

FIFA says Ceni has 98 goals, but the goalkeeper counts two he scored in unofficial friendlies - one against a combined Santos and Flamengo in 1998 and the other against Russian club Uralan Elista in an exhibition tournament in 2000. Even by FIFA's count, he is the goalkeeper with the most goals ever scored.

Ceni, 38, appeared 17 times for Brazil between 1997 and 2006 but never managed to get on the scoresheet for his country.

World Cup winner: Ceni with Ronaldinho (left) and Ronaldo (right) in his Brazil days

Corinthians are set to officially announce the signing of former Brazil striker Adriano in the coming days, while Sao Paulo will introduce striker Luis Fabiano to its fans on Tuesday.

The draw between Corinthians and Sao Paulo allowed Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras to take the lead in the 20-team standings after they beat Bragantino 3-0 on Saturday.

Here are all 100 of Rogerio Ceni's goals...

Hiliary 2020
don't tell me , when he scored the announcer screamed goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal for 5 minutes like an idiot.

During a penalty kick, the kicker and keeper each try to read the other's movement cues. The keeper is expecting a kick towards a corner of the goal. In order to reach the corner before the ball gets there, a keeper must start their move just before the kicker kicks the ball.

Can someone explain to me why this is awesome? I'm not trying to be ignorant, I just don't know the rules of football. Why is a goalie kicking free kicks?

^^^ Good. I'm not the only one.

This particular goalie kicks the free-kicks because he's good a doing it, probably better than any of his team-mates, wich is very unusual.

Very few goalies kicks the free kicks, mostly because they don't havec enough skills at doing it but also beecause if kinda dangerous : in case of counter-attack the goalie being so far from the goal is dangerous 'cause he has to run very fast to get back to the goal, otherwise, striker will face an empty goal and will score easily.

Some strikers never reach 100 goals. Rogerio Ceni reach this number by only taking free-kicks and penalty kicks

A team can choose who attempts the free kick? And penalty kicks count as goals?

Yes. A team can choose who attemps the free kick and also the penalty kick.
In-game penalty kicks count as goals, but penalty kick goals scored in a penalty shootout doesn't count.

I wonder how many goals, if any ?... have been scored by a goalie playing his position?

It happens, but obviously it's really rare.

The team can choose any player to take any free-kick or penalty kick. And the free kicks/penalty kicks don't have to be taken all by the same guy.

Usually when a free-kick is to be taken where scorinbg is impossible, any defensor take it and just pass the ball to any other player.

When it is possible to score, it's not always the same guy who takes it : Som are better at powerfull long-range shots, some are better for precise short-range shoots, some are bettter to take shoot from the right side of the pictch, other from the left side...

The sooters don't have to be choosen befor the game and known from the ref and the audience, sometimes you can even see two players talikng to determine wich of them is gonna take the shoot.

Penalty kicvks are different : since they are all taken from the penalty point wich close from the goal, it's not a question of power or precisin but mostly nerves. So, mostly, the same guy take every penalties in the games (but two penalty dring one game is not common). But sometimes, if the 1st penalty is missed, aother guy happen to take the 2nd.

And penalty kicks count as goals?
In soccer, every goals brings one point, wether it is an "in-game" goal, a penalty or a free-kick.

What is the difference between a free kick and a penalty kick? I thought penalty kicks were the 5 shots each team gets if tied after extra time?

If the offense takes place in the penalty area (18 yard box) then a penalty is awarded and one player places the ball on the penalty spot and has the opportunity to shoot with only the keeper to face. If an offense is committed outside the box then just a free kick is awarded. A penalty shootout occurs when the match is tied at full time or after extra time, you get 5 each and if still level after those it goes into sudden death until someone misses. European league games can end in draws and no penalty shootout follows, cup games may differ.

Also, Free-kicks can be taken by just passing the ball to a team-mate. Penalty-kicks must be taken by shooting to the goal, no one else than the player taking the penalty-kick and the oppposite keeper is allowed in the penalty area before it's kicked
