First of all... what an extremely tough list to compile. How do you define greatest? In terms of technical prowess or innovation? Or a combination of both?

I can't argue with Jimi Hendrix, he was a complete package rock icon.

After that you can put Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughn in there... but I'd have to give Jimmy Page a slight nod over both of those two in the "electric bluesman" category. He wasn't as techincally proficient as Clapton and Vaughn but he was more innovative and ultimately more influential. Certainly more original.

Eddie Van Halen really gets no respect in this list if he comes in at #70. Like him or not, no guitarist is capable of what he does... a solid mixture of top notch skills combined with a knack for catchy riffs... the Steve Vai's and Yngwe Malmstein's are a bunch of lacklustre copycats.

As for the guys who just play tasty chords, Keith Richards should get some respect... his guitar style is the definitive sound of roll and roll, it's rooted in the very beginnings but still resonates in today's rock... or at least what's left of rock.

Don't known if Chet Atkins was on the list... one heck of a guitar player.

And a quick nod to Pete Townsend... don't know if he ranks amongst the best but it was sure wild to watch him play. He certainly wasn't an average player.

I'd like to see Slash in there, he's awesome when he busts into solo's

and Jack White is one of my favourites so i like seeing him top 20

lets be honest with each other! Dimebag should have been #1! The top ten should include Kirk Hammet,Slash,Jimi,SRV,Rory Gallagher... cats like those!

i dont know who decided this list but its not even close!!!!
96 Angus Young of AC/DC---???
86 Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath---???

12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana---??? (the man didnt know shit about guitar playing)

I think Dave Navarro (Janes Adiction) should have been there somewhere pretty high...where is Randy Rodes (Ozzy), have i missed him?

Also, it always pisses me off that no Iron Maiden guitarists ever get a mention in these things...they could play the socks off most people anyday.

And how is Lou Reed better than Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd)???? Crazy lol

With Ritchie Blackmore rated number 55 and David Gilmour rated at number 82, there is no way that the list can be taken seriously. Mind you, Rolling Stone is a civilian magazine, so it's no surprise to me.

This was the magazine which described AC/DC as an "all time low" in hard rock in December 1976. :1orglaugh

Knightley, you should check out all Vai's early stuff when he was being schooled while touring with Zappa. Late 70's early eighties. Not all shred stuff.
And how did Zappa not make the list?

Shitty list!! First off, Jimi Hendrix is the MOST OVERRATED GUITARIST EVER!!!! Second, where the hell is John Petrucci, one of the best all around guitarists. Third, Zappa should be higher. The emotion in his solos is overwhelming.

This list is more about popularity than talent.

there are a lot of guitarists to choose from, and you guys can bitch and moan all you want, it's your personnal opinion, but i'm sure they did plenty of research, and Aggelos,"96 Angus Young of AC/DC---???
86 Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath---???"
show respect for the classic rockers
and Solitary Shell
"Jimi Hendrix is the MOST OVERRATED GUITARIST EVER!!!!"
ask his peers and every other guitarist before you say he is over rated, I do think Navarro should be in though, Every singer likes adding his solo's to there songs

there, that's my rant, lata, peace

again, personal preference, but i think that john frusciante is by far a better guitarist than dave navarro. maybe it's just the fact that i thought the red hot chili peppers suffered without frusciante, but i am not a big fan of dave navarro. maybe just clashing styles, and anybody but frusciante in the chili peppers would've sucked.

i don't like this top!Jimi Hendrix is ok to be number one,but no.2 gatta'be Jimmy Page
than Tony Iommi,Eric Clapton,Angus Young,Steve Vai,Joe Satriani,Dave Murray!!1

I agree with Jimi Hendrix, number one although my personal favourite is Eric Clapton. One choice that baffled me is Pete Townsend #50!!!!!!! He should comfortably be in the top 20.

i think slash should be up in the top ten,and dave mustane from megadeth should be up there to and hendrix does nothin for me.sorry, but thats just my opinion.
