You're missing the point. A BCS bowl game was Utah's goal from the beginning, it was not Alabama's goal. Alabama's goal was to play for the National Championship. They checked out after they lost to Florida. Utah got exactly what they wanted.

Everybody WANTS to play for a National Championship. The only difference is Alabama was less than 2 minutes from ACTUALLY playing in the National Championship, Utah always KNEW they wouldn't.

Utah knew from day one they had no shot in hell at going to the National Championship game, and they knew best case scenario they could only get to a BCS Bowl. That was their goal.

That's a good point, but similar to '96, when FSU beat Florida in their season finale, it was clear that both were the two best teams in the country and they had a rematch, which Florida won and there was really no talk of sharing the championship even though they split, it was just tough luck...

Good question. I can't recall. We're seeing the same dominance out of the SEC that the NFL saw out of the NFC from the mid 80s to the late 90s.
